1-2 format
71 series
55 wins for higher seed 77%
40 three game series 56%
26 sweeps for higher seed 37%
5 sweeps for lower seed 7%
1-1-1 format
30 series
20 wins for higher seed 67%
13 three game series 43%
13 sweeps for higher seed 43%
4 sweeps for lower seed 13%
The 1-1-1 format continues to produce more sweeps and be better for the low seeds than the 1-2.

sooo... one could argue that the 1-1-1 format works better to even the odds? make things a little more "fair"? |

Depends on your definition of "fair".

How often should the best team win? Perhaps it is skewing to favor one team over the other.

Costs ESPN less than any further game investment-think that was the deciding factor, not increased fairness to any team.

I am also a proponent of 1-1-1. The higher seed should open on their own floor and have the decider on their own floor as well. I'm sure money and logistics are the reasons given for 1-2 previously and 2-1 now. Given the choice between those 2, I guess that I would prefer 2-1? Neither is great though.

Agreed; if you're not going to do 1-1-1, then 2-1 is the least objectionable of the remaining options.
