awhom111, someone asked me an interesting question today and I realised I wasn't sure. Do you know if they'll decide the four host countries for the Qualifying Tournaments, then draw the groups while keeping those four apart; or if they'll draw the groups, then try to find a host from each resulting group of four? The latter seems fairer, but could leave them with a group where no one really wants the expense of hosting.
Thanks for these video pages, by the way. Always useful. |

I saw something on fb that team USA had a horrible 45 hour travel to their destination. DeShields posted about it and made a video i think.
So im curious to see how they will respond and will play

They had a 10-hour flight from Houston to Argentina. Their connecting flight to where the tournament is got canceled. They rescheduled to fly there yesterday(Wed), but were forced to take an 8-hour bus instead.

That'll just make them angry, and probably add another 10 points to their margin of victory in game 1.

China-Korea game that started everything off was a heck of a contest if anyone wants to go back and check it out. And the eventual result means that Saturday's New Zealand-China game is huge. If the hosts can pull off the (admittedly unlikely) upset, China are out. |

I guess we could have waited a day. Belgium, France, and Serbia will host and China will host as long as they make it. |
That's... not great for GB. Given their attatchment to 'geographically diverse' groups that means we're unlikely to be in a group with an African team, generally the weakest section. Still a hell of a lot down to luck if the pots are just geographical rather than ranking-based, though.
One small positive is Ostend and Bourges would be pretty straightforward to get to for a quick trip in February... |

Sure it did not actually happen, but it brings up visions of traveling on a movie stereotype third-world bus trip. You know buses filled to overflowing with people and chicken, pigs and goats etc. No wonder feathers kept falling out of the players' hair during games. And here I thought it was due to fashion statements.

Opals-Japan should be an interesting one. Japan have had our number lately.
We've got a close to full strength team so no excuses.

Barring something really freaking unlikely we're down to only the two African spots left to be decided:
Spain
France (host)
Serbia (host)
Great Britain
Belgium (host)
Sweden
USA (Q)
Brazil
Canada
Puerto Rico
South Korea
China (host)
Japan (Q)
Australia
Nigeria/Mali
Senegal/Mozambique
FIBA keep going on about wanting universal representation in the groups, so I'm expecting one Asia, one Americas, one/two Europe and zero/one Africa team in every group. So much of this comes down to the draw for the teams on the edge. Brazil or Puerto Rico instead of the US would be huge, and Japan and Australia either literally or essentially reduce the places available in their group to two. What I really want is one of the African nations in our group, which if I'm right about the format can only happen if we end up in China. Yeesh. |

Canada beat Puerto Rico 84-80 in a surprisingly close game between the #4 and #24 ranked teams. Puerto Rico played zone and Canada couldn't make them pay because they struggled to hit outside shots. Canada also kept throwing crazy passes which led to turnovers. A lot of their problems were self-inflicted. Anyway, with less than a minute left, Puerto Rico tied the game on a 4-point play. After that, it came down to free throws. Canada made six in a row (Nurse, Raincock, Scott), but O'Neill missed both of hers for Puerto Rico. That was unfortunate because Jennifer otherwise had a great game, making numerous tough shots with defenders in her face. She was a major reason why Puerto Rico was able to hang with Canada.
For you rules people out there, this game had an odd call that neither I nor the announcers have ever seen before. In the 4th Quarter, Nurse got fouled while driving to the hoop and her wild toss toward the basket rolled in. She then taunted the Puerto Rican defender. After a long discussion between the referees, Kia drew a technical foul. However, instead of having the defender shoot a free throw, and Nurse follow up with the "and one", they declared the fouls offseting and neither player took a foul shot. Nonetheless, they counted the basket. I don't watch FIBA basketball regularly. Has anyone else ever seen that before?

Japan outplaying the Opals and leading 47-34 at half time.
2nd quarter was fairly even but the first was trash by the aussies.

Opals close to within 4 and then Liz techs herself out of the game abusing a ref.
The Wings fans here would have enjoyed that.

That's Japan with a few players missing, I believe, as well. On home soil, with the crowd behind them, they could be a threat to cause some upsets and maybe even snatch a medal in Tokyo. |

The Aussies were worried about Japan before the game even started. They always seem to have trouble with them. I guess it's one of those matchup issues. Well, it appears like their fears have manifested into reality.

Well, not like it was a huge fear. Means absolutely nothing in terms of qualification. |

There was actually plenty of math to do in Korea-New Zealand and Cuba was a surprise for a while, but here is what we ended with:

New Zealand made it shockingly interesting. For a while I was actually trying to work out who went through if they won by 12 to create a point-difference tie (the commentators clearly had no clue). Amazed Cuba kept it that close after losing by nearly 60 to Canada.
Ultimately, Mozambique managing to knock out Senegal was probably the only thing even resembling an upset from the teams that advanced. |

Means nothing for qualification, but I think Japan are now 3-0 in our last 3 meetings and that should be cause for concern for Brondello. We're coming off second-best in most of the mismatches. Whether it's tactical or personnel, something needs to change.

What is the next step the Aussies have to do to get an Olympic spot ?

This quote from the WNBL website pretty much covers it
Quote: |
The Opals will now look to the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament that will be held from February 6 – 9, 2020.
There will be 16 women’s teams competing at the tournament, which will consist of two from Africa, four from Americas, four from Asia and six from Europe and will be split into four groups of four.
The Opals will need to finish in the top three of their pool of four to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
FIBA will announce the draw for the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament on the 27th of November at FIBA Headquarters. |

I havent seen it yet but because technical fouls are now only 1 FT that sounds like the right choice. Similar to when teams get a double technical.
