IUPUI Assistant Stan Benge has left to take over at Roncalli HS ... IUPUI HC Austin Parkinson tweeted about it. |
Benge was the longtime coach at Ben Davis HS, where he had great teams and great talent. I think Alex Bentley went there. |
Shyra Ely also went there. |
Ditto Dee Dee Williams and Jordan Huber.

Baylor assistant coach Rheka Patterson is leaving for an assistant coach job at Ball State! This is the second puzzling assistant coaching job switch after Joy Cheek left Duke for Ohio State. Duke has lost some key assistants but recruiting has not suffered, yet if I am Wake Forest I try to see if Candace Jackson is interested in returning to Wake.

There are rumors that an new Asst Coach has been selected for Duke who has no Div.1 coaching or recruiting experience. How's that for building a powerhouse program? And, yeah, every once in a blue moon, a Sherri Coale comes from nowhere, but more often, a coaching resume is built through solid, progressive experience. And why won't Duke announce who they've picked?

Wasn't Joy Cheek new to coaching? Two years later she leaves and its considered a big loss, so she must have caught on quickly. If McCallie can hire Cheek who never coached and was not that good of a player, why can't another player with a similar background work out? I don't know how good Cheek was, but I bet selling Duke made it much easier for her to recruit than if she started out coaching at a small school like Bridgette Mitchell and Wanisha Smith did. Is Cheek any better than them, or was she fortunate that its not hard to attract student-athletes to Duke?

Joy Cheek was a unique selection, in that she was a recent grad of Duke, played for McCallie at Duke and was known for having a personality that would likely lead to being an effective recruiter. If McCallie finds another like Joy, more power to her, but the chance of that happening after Joy leaves for a lateral, or even downward, job has decreased. If they name who is rumored to be selected, none of Joy Cheek's advantages will come into play. The only common denominator would be lack of experience.

Ummmm........they gotta start somewhere. Maybe this person has been successful in another division, and/or maybe Coach P. knows him/her well. And maybe they won't announce it until all the details are in place and the contract is signed. Why do you have to think the worst?

Because of a reflexive hatred of everything Joanne McCallie ever has done and ever will do.

Rheka had also interviewed for the head coaching job at Eastern Illinois, before they decided to hire Debbie Black. Rheka was also an assistant at EIU.
