LAS VEGAS (May 17, 2024)—The Las Vegas Aces (1-0) continue their season-opening, four-game homestand, Saturday, with a 12 pm PT tip against the Los Angeles Sparks (0-1) on ABC.

The Aces celebrated their 2023 WNBA Championship in the season opener on Tuesday, receiving their championship rings and raising their championship banner to the rafters, while upending the phoenix Mercury (0-1) 89-80. A'ja Wilson recorded a 30-point, 13-rebound double-double, in the victory, while Jackie Young added 23 points, and Kelsey Plum chipped in 19.

It was the 14th career 30-plus point game for the two-time M'VP, which is the most in franchise history. That performance came in front of a record-setting Michelob ULTRA Arena crowd of 10,419.

The Sparks opened the 2024 campaign dropping a 92-81 decision to the Atlanta Dream (1-0), Wednesday evening. Tied at 76 entering the fourth quarter, the Dream outscored the Sparks 26-15 in the final period to pick up the win. Rhyne Howard scored 10 points in the fourth, while Los Angeles made just 4 of 21 shots from the field over the last 10 minutes of play.

Kia Nurse (23 points), and Dearica Hamby (20) paced the Spark in scoring, while Layshia Clarendon posted an 11-point, 10-assist, 10-rebound triple-double. Hamby added a game-high-tying 14 rebounds for LA.

Sparks' rookies Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson scored 11 and 7 points respectively in their WNBA debuts.

Las Vegas is 45-54 all-time against Los Angeles. The Aces won 13-straight games against the Sparks before LA picked up a 78-72 victory in the final regular season meeting of the year between the clubs last season.

They just showed the head convention center guy in the locker room telling the Aces they are going to give them each $100,000.

Brink with 3 blocks in about 4 minutes. Really like her game at this level.

These refs really don't like Brink. Calling some ticky tack fouls. Meanwhile she gets bodied and no call..

Hamby's eyes get big as a UAP when she plays against Vegas.

Martin was in down the stretch. Until she fouled Jackson on a rebound. Pulled for Stokes. Who then bothers Hamby enough that she misses a drive to the basket. Which would have brought them to within two. Then Young hits a three to put it out of touch at 7.

Two things-

1. I'm probably in the minority, but I like the Aces rebrand. The silver and black is so sleek and frankly, suits the toughness of this team.

2. I really want Paige to go to LA.

I watched part of this game but not all ...

Did the commentators ever mention Hamby's controversial and bitter split with Las Vegas? Or was it just cheerleading all night? (An NBA or truly professional broadcast would have been all over it from minute one ...)

Their job was to broadcast the game, not to play journalist.

But that's not what ESPN does, so Clay is right in asking. ESPN is social justice and race baiting first, sports second. If that split would've made any other team look bad, they'd have been all over it.

But they want to be seen as journalists.

And even so, Hamby's performance certainly could be cast as a kind of revenge against the Aces, and her high level of play impacted the game. To not mention that at all, or the Aces getting punished for the incident, makes it clear what the announcers are: Cheerleaders.

If women's basketball wants the respect accorded to other professional leagues, the pom-poms need to be permanently retired.

It was mentioned multiple times last year, I believe. How long do you want it to still be brought up before it turns into a dead horse beating?
