It's possible that there was some kind of coding error given how low the threshold was, but apparently neither of Sunday's games rated in cable's top 150 broadcasts in the 18-49 demographic to make the usual list where people get ratings. That morning's Argentina-Spain men's world championship final did average 131,000 viewers though.

Not surprising, really, and a big reason for the one-and-done games ...

Sunday's games appear to have been rated too low to be available on our usual source.

Game 4 averaged 262,000 viewers.

ESPN2 is basically in the same number of homes as ESPN, but not always in good channel placement so it tends to get fewer casual viewers since people just mindlessly turn to ESPN.

Game 1 averaged 234,000 viewers.

I was hoping that Game 1 would be on ABC since that would have allowed them to compact the rest of the series a bit, but it was not and video game playing was, which averaged 300,000 viewers.

NICE!! Not having to compete against the NFL really helps.

It was even on the main Sky Sports channel over here. No NFL games, no Caribbean cricket, no MMA etc etc. Baseball rights are owned by a different broadcaster, so they literally ran out of 1am alternatives.

For a game on ABC, that's a bit low. I know we had NFL competition, but still, I was expecting higher.

Same at least 500,00 on the low end. Cowboys packers most likely owned the day .

Game 4 averaged 312,000 viewers. For those who wanted the game on ESPN, a preseason NBA game there averaged 720,000 viewers.

Frustrating it’s obvious when the W gets put on ESPN the viewership sky rockets then as soon as we get shipped back to ESPN2 we drop like flies.

Game 5 averaged 440,000 viewers.

College football averaged 714,000 viewers on ESPN. I am not sure what people want ESPN to do in this case. Even not taking into account contracts and events that were scheduled before the WNBA had a schedule, do people want them to keep the prime slot open even though they don't know if they will need it until a few days before?

Surely there's nothing to stop them having 'WNBA if necessary' scheduled for ESPN with the college football scheduled for ESPN2, then if the WNBA is over they can slide the college football over to ESPN instead (and show whatever random filler they like on ESPN2)? They're already either keeping ESPN2 open for WNBA, or displacing some lesser event that they would've shown instead.

The fact the Game 5, on ESPN2, got more viewers than Game 3, on ABC, isn't good. I appreciate the ABC games, but not during football season. We need more regular-season games on ABC during July/August.

As we all know, sadly, if more people watched when the games were available, then there would be more prominent placement.

I'm not convinced the difference between ESPN and ESPN2 is enough, in terms who can see it, to claim that the WNBA finals would outdraw college football.

Me neither, but as we've talked about many times around here, a lot of this can be circular. More coverage leads to more interest leads to more coverage leads to more interest etc. So if ESPN genuinely wants to grow the game/league, putting the games in good slots before its ratings may deserve those slots could be part of that. Or if the NBA is genuinely invested themselves, maybe they use some of their leverage to get ESPN to offer those concessions. At every new negotiation, ESPN is obviously desperate to hold on to NBA rights, and the NBA's popularity has only grown in recent years. It's up to the NBA how much of that strong negotiating position is just used to get the most money possible, and how much is to get ancillary things like favourable time-slots and preferential coverage - whether for the NBA or offshoots like the WNBA, G-League, their eSports efforts and everything else.

For those curious, the NWSL semifinals averaged 102,000 and 155,000 viewers on ESPN2 on Sunday. Penn State-Michigan State volleyball averaged 171,000 viewers on ESPN during some of the first game.

The celebrity game averaged 1,449,000 viewers so as usual it's a big opportunity for the WNBA players involved. It was within the margin of error compared to the game after it that actually involved NBA players.
