This will be an interesting match-up on several levels. Besides getting an early glimpse at how the defending national champions will look this season, the Gamecocks will have new role players stepping up into major responsibilities. Also, there is an off-the-court dynamic to this match-up, as Hornets Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson is the mother of true freshman Gamecock Guard Bianca Jackson. Bianca's father is also the HC of the men's team for Alabama State.
A Gamecocksonline article on the dynamic:
http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/110917aaa.html
Alabama State went 14-16 (12-6) last season. They should not pose a major threat to the Gamecocks, but they went 1-9 during their non-conference season last season by playing possibly the toughest OOC schedule of any non-Power 5 team. They had games @ UNC, @ Georgia Tech, @ Southern Mississippi, @ Ohio State, @ Mississippi State, and @ LSU. So the Hornets should be familiar with playing against the big teams.
I would predict the starting lineup for the Gamecocks:
PG: 5-10 SO Tyasha Harris
G: 5-6 SR Lindsey Spann
G: 6-0 JR Doniyah Cliney
F: 6-5 SR A'ja Wilson
F: 6-3 JR Alexis Jennings
