In male basketball, at all levels from high school to college to the NBA, there is a very significant presence of black players, and there has been for many, many decades.
There are two directions I suggest for this topic:
-- List the best black male coaches in women's college basketball.
-- If that proves difficult or the list seems short or under-representative, discuss possible explanations as to why. |

Active coaches would include Quentin Hillsman at Syracuse and Travis Mays at SMU.
I honestly can't think of others off the top of my head. Fred Williams spent a lot of his time at the collegiate level and there was a great veteran coach that is a coaching journeyman - Jim Lewis, who is either in the WNBA or at Georgia Tech as an assistant.
Beyond that, it seems...rare.

Wendell Hudson was recently the HC at Alabama but moved to some kind of admin position several years ago. He wouldn't be a nominee for any "best coach" list.
Tough question. The number of black coaches in MCBB is declining too, 22% in 2016.

Well, obviously (or maybe not), a lot, if not most of them would be at HBCUs. David Six at Hampton, also two of his assistants, Tim Valentine and Jermaine Brown. Larry Vickers at Norfolk State. Dewayne Burroughs at Coppin State. Fred Batchelor at Maryland Eastern Shore. Edward Davis (interim), Morgan State. Tarrell Robinson, NC A&T. Doug Robertson, SC State. That's just the MEAC. The other 5 schools in that conference do have female HCs. A lot of the male HCs have primarily male assistants. Some don't. Seems pretty much the same as the male-to-female ratio elsewhere.
Fact is, there aren't a lot of black HCs in the men's game either.

| I would note that while 22% is a relatively small number compared to the number of A-A players, it's actually a rather large number compared to the general population. Since playing basketball at a high level isn't really a requirement for coaching basketball, the percentage doesn't really seem low (though that's the men's side, not the women's).
