This was a nice update from the B1G site yesterday. I won't bother trying to imbed the links. Source is here: http://www.bigten.org/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/080217aaa.html
Aug. 2, 2017
The 2017-18 Big Ten women’s basketball season is on the horizon, and several conference programs have gotten an early start on their seasons with overseas competition this summer.
USA World University Games Roster To Have Big Ten Flavor
Representatives from Big Ten members Maryland and Michigan State will join forces to represent the United States at the 2017 World University Games, scheduled for Aug. 19-30 in Taipei, Taiwan. The USA roster will be comprised almost entirely of students from three-time Big Ten champion Maryland, along with 2017 Michigan State graduate and first-round WNBA Draft pick Tori Jankoska, and will be led by Terrapins’ head coach Brenda Frese. The Americans will open with pool play games against Uganda (Aug. 21), Poland (Aug. 22) and the Czech Republic (Aug. 23) before knockout round play begins Aug. 25 and culminates with the medal round games on Aug. 28. Hoosiers Head To Italy
Indiana leaves Wednesday on its first foreign tour in eight years, taking a nine-day trip through Italy. The Hoosiers will visit the historic Italian cities of Rome, Florence, Venice and Pisa during their European adventure and are slated to play three games against Italian club teams along the way. Indiana will take on KZKSU Radnicki 2016 on Aug. 7 and 8 (both games played in Florence) before finishing up against Veneto Stars on Aug. 9 in Venice. Details on the Hoosiers’ Italian tour can be found by CLICKING HERE.
Wolverines Off To Europe
Later this month, Michigan will embark on its own European tour, visiting Italy and Greece during a 10-day excursion from Aug. 21-31. The Wolverines will start their trip in Italy with stops in Rome, Pompeii and Sorrento, before heading to Athens, Greece, for the final four days of the journey. Michigan will also play three games during its European tour, facing the Italian All-Stars on Aug. 24 in Rome, followed by a pair of games in Athens against Greek clubs Sporting BC (Aug. 2Cool and Olimpiacos BC (Aug. 29). A complete rundown on Michigan’s tour is available by CLICKING HERE.
Precious Medals For Big Ten Duo
Michigan incoming freshman Hailey Brown and Wisconsin sophomore Kendra Van Leeuwen earned bronze medals with the Canada Under-19 National Team at the FIBA U19 World Cup which concluded July 30 in Italy. It was Canada’s best-ever finish at the U19 tournament and that country’s highest finish at any FIBA international event since 2012. Brown averaged 10.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game at the FIBA U19 World Cup, while Van Leeuwen chalked up 2.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game with a 10.0 assist/turnover ratio during the tournament. More information on the Canadian U19 World Cup team, including a recap of its 67-60 bronze-medal game win over Japan (when the Big Ten pair combined for 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists), can be found by CLICKING HERE, HERE and HERE.
Big Ten Well-Represented at USA Basketball Under-23 National Team Camp
Five Big Ten students are among 36 participants at the USA Basketball Women’s Under-23 National Team Training Camp, which takes place this week in Colorado Springs. Representing the Big Ten are Indiana’s Tyra Buss, Michigan’s Hallie Thome, Ohio State’s Linnae Harper and Kelsey Mitchell, and Penn State’s Teniya Page. The camp, which features participants ages 23 or under who are freshmen, sophomores or juniors in college, will be highlighted by four teams competing in a round-robin tournament and will help USA Basketball identify its 12-member roster for the inaugural U23 Four Nations Tournament Aug. 12-15 in Tokyo. Full details can be found by CLICKING HERE.
Two Big Ten Students Visit Africa With Athletes in Action
Rutgers junior Victoria Harris and 2016 Northwestern graduate Christen Johnson traveled to the Ivory Coast earlier this summer for a 10-day trip with Athletes in Action. The tour featured several coaching clinics and basketball camps, while providing humanitarian aid in the country’s capital city of Abidjan and the surrounding areas. The AIA group also trained and competed with the Ivory Coast’s U19 National Team and clubs from several other countries. For more information, CLICK HERE.
Former Nebraska Student Earns Top Honors Down Under
Kelsey Griffin, a 2010 Nebraska graduate, earned Most Valuable Player honors while playing for Australia at the FIBA Asia Cup July 23-29 in Bangalore, India. Griffin is a native of Eagle River, Alaska, and earned permanent Australian citizenship in 2015 while playing professionally Down Under in Australia’s highly-regarded Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). Griffin averaged 17.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game during the six-game Asia Cup, her first tournament with the Australian national side, which is nicknamed the Opals. A complete recap of her performance is available by CLICKING HERE.
