Five years ago, Pilight started up a topic of former WNBA players who are now on the coaching staffs of teams that were in the NCAA tournaments.

Here was the link to that:
http://boards.rebkell.net/viewtopic.php?p=1025149

How about an update?

I would have said Murriel Page, but her status is kind of in limbo at present.....

You must have been looking at the wrong bench. She's an assistant for Kentucky.

Seems like a small list when you consider how many players have come through the league, and when players who had only a brief career like many of those above, are included.

Not every player wants to coach....or should. Some don't have the desire for it, others don't have the temperament.

A substantial portion of the players who have played in the W are still playing, either in the league or overseas. Plus, foreign players (who make up nearly a quarter of WNBA players) are not likely to pursue US collegiate jobs. You also have to factor in that most American WNBA players have degrees, so they have prospects outside the game. Also, many schools have men coaching their women's teams, which precludes WNBA players.

For comparison, the NBA has been around far longer and has many more teams, resulting in a far greater number of former players, but the list of former NBA players who are D-I head coaches is only slightly longer...

Steve Alford UCLA
Michael Curry Florida Atlantic
Johnny Dawkins Central Florida
Bryce Drew Vanderbilt
Mike Dunleavy Sr Tulane
Bobby Hurley Arizona State
Avery Johnson Alabama
Larry Krystkowiak Utah
Jim Les UC Davis
Dan Majerle Grand Canyon
Danny Manning Wake Forest
Donyell Marshall Central Connecticut
Cuonzo Martin Missouri
Chris Mullin St John's
Craig Neal New Mexico
Kevin Ollie Connecticut
Scott Padgett Samford
Mark Pope Utah Valley
Terry Porter Portland
Mark Price Charlotte
Al Skinner Kennesaw State
Damon Stoudamire Pacific
Reggie Theus Cal State Northridge
Corey Williams Stetson

You might also include Jeff Judkins, the WCBB coach at BYU

That doesn't sound right. Nearly a quarter? That would be a least 2.5 players on every team on average. I think Mercury have historically hit that, but it doesn't seem like that is typical without going and looking at the rosters, which I guess I should do.

866 players have played in the WNBA. 199 of them were born outside the US. That's 23%, nearly a quarter. The percentage was slightly lower in 2016. 155 players played in at least one game. 32 of those were born outside the US, 21% of the total.

There are a lot of foreign-born college players, who muck up the simple calculation of "this person's college says a country instead".

They still rarely go into US college coaching

What I like about this list is that Western Conference players outnumber Eastern Conference players 15-to-10.
