As she is nearing the end of her career, and considering all levels, all leagues and all teams she's played on, is Sue Bird the overall best point guard ever?
If you vote no, you are duty bound to state who you think has been better. In other words, no anti-Sue ballot stuffing.

Nancy Lieberman. They named the award after her for a reason.

It was such a different era, it would be hard to compare it to the way the game is played now IMO.

The "Award Named After Theory" would make Lieberman better than Bird only as to Bird's four-year NCAA career, since it's only a college award. Right? And the ANA Theory would forever make Margaret Wade the best WCBB player ever -- and James Naismith, a man, too. Egads!
That confusion aside, Bird was the first winner of the Lieberman Award and the only college player ever to win it three times.
In any event, thanks for stating your choice. I might pick Lieberman second to Bird overall, even though Bird has had such a richer post-college career than was possible during Lady Magic's era. |

I read a great commentary on Bird a few years ago. I wish I could remember the name of the person who wrote it because he so succinctly summarized perhaps her greatest strength: She can run an efficient offense at any tempo. It's just so true and so well-stated.
Bird makes the players around her better--and not because she draws multiple defenders and leaves teammates with open looks. She makes her teammates better because when she is running the offense, she makes reads so fast and so accurately, and then she plays to her teammates' strengths. She has been successful at all levels, in all leagues, because of her ability to run an efficient offense with different personnel.
Of course, I'm biased. I also never saw Lieberman play. But I have never seen a better point guard than Bird. All future point guards will be measured against her.

Pure PG, yup, imo.
Combo guard is a different argument.

Of the ones I have seen, yes.
Though, if I was building a team, I might pick Taurasi to be my point guard instead.
