If it wasn't for Jewell Loyd coming out early, last year's draft would be like the 2013 NBA Draft. |
The 2013 NBA Draft actually ended up having some pretty good players. Victor Oladipo, Nerlens Noel, C.J. McCollum, Steven Adams, Dennis Schroeder, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Rudy Gobert, Kentavius Caldwell-Pope. Granted, probably no stars, but a lot of solid starters.

Giannis Antetokounmpo will be a star. No doubt about that.

So is that WTF, OMG, or IDK?
Let the plot thicken. |
We have Monica Wright and Jenna O'Hea off the bench who are both a lot better then KML. So not really a surprise. |
Not a surprise at all. Jenny probably had her in to see if she could get bench points off her. Given that better defenders were needed against the Libs, she sat. Gonna have to give her more time before you write her off.

I was talking about how the 2013 draft's best players aren't exactly big-time superstars, and ended up being from middle of the first round, and the top is terrible compared to most drafts (#1 pick Anthony Bennett being out of the NBA already).

Welp, ole KML's been in the league 5 years now. Clay, the maker of this thread (that I somehow remembered) gave up on her over 3 years ago. Incredibly, I'm really only giving up on her now. This was the year to take on an increased role, but alas, no such role came to pass. Here are her stats. For the past 5 seasons with the Storm, she has made 1, 2, or 3 shots in 55% of games in her first year, then 57%, 55%, 59% and this year actually 74% - still, in total, 86/141 games (60%). She has never shot below 39% from the field in a season, which she has done in 3/5 seasons including this one. 4.6 PPG in 2017 is her career low; 5.8 PPG in 2015 is her career high; and 5.5 PPG this year. She has made either 11 or 14 FTs each season. She has averaged exactly 5 games of double-digit points per season (High of 7 in 2016; low of 3 in injury-shortened 2017).
So for any team out there that's interested in her for their bench (or... elsewhere??), her biggest selling point is her consistency; she is who she has been in this league since she graduated college, and that exact story is shown in the stats. Hoping we can trade her for a table scrap or two

I frankly do not understand how she has lasted this long. Any advantage that she provided as a 3pt specialist was negated by her liability on defense or lack of any other skill. I also do not know how Paris has lasted this long as either.
Also as vets, they certainly cost more on the salary cap than say a rookie, second or third-year player. That money could have been better spent.

And honestly she's a bit overrated as a 3-point shooter. 34% this year, 34% for her career. |
That's always been part of the issue. If she was Laurie Koehn from outside, then it mitigates some of her drawbacks. But she's never been that in the pros. She basically shoots league-average from three-point range. When that's supposed to be the primary positive about your game, it's not good enough. |

There's no way any team should overpay for her next season that needs a 3pt specialist. Never understood the point of the Storm having both her & Whitcomb on the roster when Whitcomb's a better 3pt shooter and provides some much more than KML.

I remember when we were calling the 2015 draft the "KML Draft" before the early entries came along. We probably should have called it the "Cloud Draft".

I doubt you’ll find any mock drafts that even had Cloud getting drafted.

Loyd, Cloud & Hamby have been the top 3 from that draft class. Then Parker, Zahui B, Harrison & Williams. Crystal Bradford? Ally Malott? Sam Logic?
RE-DRAFT
1. Seattle - Loyd
2. Tulsa - Hamby
3. Seattle - Cloud
4. Connecticut - Parker
5. Chicago - Harrison
6. San Antonio - Zahui B
7. Los Angeles - Williams
8. Washington - Mosqueda-Lewis
9. New York - Stokes
10. Atlanta - Boyd
11. New York - Gray
12. Phoenix - Laney

Toad, I thought you were saying $70K was too much to pay for KML, but here you have her ranked above three of your own players.

I don't think anyone ranked 8 and higher belong in the league.

One could argue a few of your positions, Hamby v. Cloud, Williams v. Zahui B or Harrison at 7. She was known to be injured and couldn't play the first season so that did drop her. I won't since they are all pretty reasonable.
The +- shows where they were v where they should have been drafted. Cloud should have been drafted 12 picks earlier, KML 6 picks later. Does shows that even in what was otherwise a very bad draft, there are still some useful player.

Dunno how Cloud would have worked out somewhere else. In Seattle, Jenny Boucek would have had no idea how to use her effectively.

Looking at her record, it doesn't seem Boucek knew how to use anyone effectively.

Realistically Cloud probably would have gone #4 to Connecticut before they acquire J Thomas.

No way Thibault would have selected KML. He likes multi-faceted players, not non-faceted players.

His compliment: He’s better at second round picks than first round picks.
