There isn't a single category that favors Northwestern over Purdue with the huge exception of preseason polls/expectations. The Boilers have outplayed the Wildcats in every single way so far this season.

WTF? This was from over 2 weeks ago after Purdue beat Northwestern in Evanston head to head...and prior to Ohio State playing either team. That said, NW is 2-6 in conference play.

Man, how about we try to stay within context if at all possible. Rolling Eyes

In this weeks polls, the coaches poll has Northwestern receiving points and Purdue not. In the AP, Purdue received point and Northwestern didn't. Neither is ranked. Northwestern is a disappointment. Maybe he didn't schedule a strong enough pre conference schedule. I have no idea way Purdue isn't getting more attention. But as of today, Northwestern has the better win.

LOL...seriously? Because a single win makes a season...smh. Not sure what your deal is but this is kind of strange and out of left field. However, since you brought this over 2 week old stuff up, let's look at the 2 teams as they currently sit. Oh, and by the way, I tend to think head to head results are the best way to measure teams against each other but clearly it's how they played against Ohio State...again, seriously? Anyway, here we go:

Northwestern - 13-7, 2-6...RPI #69
Purdue - 15-4, 6-2...RPI #25

Northwestern - Losses: #28 DePaul, #25 Purdue (71-85), @ #21 Michigan St, @ #23 Maryland, @ #96 Minnesota, #54 Indiana...Bad Loss: @ #130 Penn State
Purdue - Losses: #6 Stanford, #77 BC, @ #5 Ohio St, #59 Nebraska...no bad losses

Northwestern: Good wins - #59 Nebraska, #5 Ohio St
Purdue: Good wins - #14 Louisville, #40 Dayton, #43 Ball State, #90 Maine, @ #76 Michigan, @ #69 Northwestern (85-71), #54 Indiana, #96 Minnesota and #49 Iowa

Northwestern record vs Top 50: 1-4
Purdue record vs Top 50: 4-2

Northwestern record vs Top 100: 2-6
Purdue record vs Top 100: 9-4

Purdue has more wins vs Top 100 teams than games Northwestern has even played vs Top 100. But yeah, I can see where a single victory makes a difference. Rolling Eyes

My point is a simple on. the only advantage Northwestern has over Purdue is that they beat Ohio State and Purdue didn't. Sorry if that upsets you but it is a fact. If Northwestern wins on Thursday, then it would be 2 wins against Ohio State and Purdue still didn't beat them, although they only play once in the regular season. Sorry if you are offended.

LOL! Offended? No, just very random and strange...but hey, keep on keeping on. I would argue that really means nothing in the grand scheme of things (as single games really don't live in a vacuum) but I guess you get kudos for pointing out factual things that everybody already knows. So thank you for that.

If you look at the schedule, these games coming up will definitely tell the tale for Purdue...if they are real or not. The meat of their schedule is yet to come. @ MSU today will be a challenge. If they win there, they show something.

The late great Joe Smith called this kind of thinking "result nullification."

Who cares if Purdue beat Northwestern? I thought Northwestern was better before, reason the posters, and how could I have been wrong?

If they are real? What? Some of this is so crazy to me. They are 15-4 against the 32nd toughest schedule to date with 9 wins over Top 100 teams and 4 over the Top 50. Yet they aren't real?

I agree they have some tough games coming up but regardless of if they win or lose, I'm pretty sure they have already shown that they are "real".

Are they a threat to win the National Championship? Not even close. Are they a threat to win the Big Ten regular season title? Not even close. Are they a threat to finish in the top 4 or 5 and return to the NCAA's? Absolutely.

Just because myself and a few other Purdue fans are excited about where this team is right now doesn't mean we think they are national players again. They are a long way from that but have taken some steps forward this year, especially after last year which is proving to be an anomaly.

Data has ruined many a hypothesis, but only if you allow it to do so. I prefer selective attention myself!

thanks for clarifying. I thought the way you were raving that you thought they are national contenders. I'm happy for you to be excited about your team, and even if they end up 4th or 5th in the league, they will have greatly exceeded expectations. And you're right, 'real' was not a good way of expressing it. Congrats to you and your team for how well they have done.

Heavens no. I think with the right draw and a little luck, they could be a Sweet 16 team but that would be the absolute farthest they could get and even that seems maybe a little beyond reach. It is nice to have some optimism back about the program though.

No Duke in women's top 25; no Duke in men's.

Next you'll tell me the Golden State Warriors are 44-4.

It is mind-boggling that 9-loss Tennessee is still ranked.

It is, but then look at the ORVs and tell me honestly who you think is better.

It gets pretty mushy down at that range.

It does, but I feel like I don't even care. You just cannot have a 14-9 team ranked at this point.

Interesting voting for the 2nd and 3rd spots.

Baylor got one #3 vote ahead of S. Car., from Carl Adamec, the UConn writer. Mildly surprised the local Waco Tribune reporter had 2-3-4 as ND, SCar, Baylor. The Columbia SC writer had SCar as #2.

Michelle Smith is the only TV/radio personality to have SCar #2. Antonelli, Lobo, LaChina Robinson, Voepel, Joe Brocato (WDTV-TV, Bridgeport, WV), and Jared Stillman (ESPN Radio Nashville) all voted ND #2. Sports Illustrated (Richard Deitsch and Lindsay Schnell) prefers SCar for #2.

Overall ND got nineteen 2nd place votes and thirteen 3rds. S.Car got thirteen 2nd, eighteen 3rd and one 4th.

Ohio St got two 4th place votes, both from out west (Wyoming and Oregon). 5th and 6th it starts getting somewhat more mixed.
