Athlon is out. Caught a glimpse of the magazine at a not so local Barnes & Noble this past week. Shoulda bought it because It hasn't hit my locale yet. But from what Is being reported:

1. UConn
2. Notre Dame
3. Tennessee
4. South Carolina
5. The Ohio State
6. Mississippi State
7.
8.
9. Texas A&M
10. Texas

19. Kentucky

Okay, who is Mississippi State playing that we don't know about yet? Does Elena Delle Donne have another year of eligibility only at Mississippi State?

Athlon

01 UConn
02 Notre Dame
03 Tennessee
04 South Carolina
05 Ohio State
06 Mississippi State
07 Baylor
08 Louisville
09 Texas A&M
10 Texas
11 Oklahoma
12 Northwestern
13 Duke
14 Arizona State
15 Florida State
16 Maryland
17 Stanford
18 Oregon State
19 Kentucky
20 North Carolina
21 George Washington
22 Chattanooga
23 South Florida
24 Syracuse
25 Princeton

how is TAMU considered a top 10 team,

why is North Carolina even in the top 25,

how can they think that Miss St and tOSU are a whisker away from being FF-caliber teams,

why is Tenn once again a FF pick, after years of being picked in the top 4 only to fail (for 7 straight years),

why is it the best any PAC 12 team ranked is 14th.

I would take Duke over all teams in front of them except the first four.

If I remember correctly, I think this write up, even though it was just published,, still had Mavunga (and maybe Gray) as still being in Chapel Hill.

And no Elena Della Donne in Starkville, although they have Elena Lovato (twice NC coach at Trinity Valley CC) on their staff.

I like Baylor as a Final Four prospect more than Tennessee; even without Imani Wright they have Niya Johnson, Nina Davis, Khadijah Cave, and Alexis Prince coming back plus throw in Alexis Jones.

Florida State should be second best ACC team and Inwould suggest Top Ten worthy.

Nice to see N'Western getting love. McKewon coaching aside, they have a nice little group returning.

OU?

I agree with NoDakSt in that many people are underestimating Baylor. Of course we won't know how good Baylor is until the tournament because I think the B12 is down a bit and Mulkey again scheduled a shameful OOC schedule.

Here's Lindy's top 25 (I found this on a Baylor board posted by slimecap):

01 UConn
02 South Carolina
03 Tennessee
04 Notre Dame
05 Baylor
06 Louisville
07 Oregon State
08 Mississippi State
09 Texas
10 Maryland
11 Florida State
12 Duke
13 Ohio State
14 Arizona State
15 Oklahoma
16 Texas A&M
17 George Washington
18 Kentucky
19 Stanford
20 Florida Gulf Coast
21 North Carolina
22 South Florida
23 Northwestern
24 Rutgers
25 Michigan State

I don't know about some of these rankings. I agree with the first four. After that no so much.

Just a note: When I was doing these for Street & Smith's, my deadline was in June sometime.

Wow, that is so early. I would have guessed it would be sometime around the end of July beginning of August. But I guess really there can't be much more than can be learned without games being played and teams unable to practice if a later deadline is given.

Here is a justification for Athlon's ranking: http://athlonsports.com/magazines/athlon-sports-2015-16-preseason-womens-college-basketball-top-25

Obviously it's a bit dated because Mavunga hasn't transferred yet (but Gray has).

The bottom line is that these publications don't care that much about women's basketball and are basically concerned with just putting something in print so that they can say they cover the women's game.

So sometimes the editor has a buddy who needs a little money and says "Here, write this ... just get it in by deadline."

There's an entire thread just a little ways down the page called "It's time: Top 25" where posters here have put their own top 25 rankings and where you should feel free to post yours.

I will start by saying, I am NOT a Tenn. fan BUT I can recognize a great team. I don't see what people are seeing concerning Tenn. South Carolina STILL CAN'T SCORE!!! They have not added anyone new to the team that will change that (this year). They only have one true backup big (unlike last year when they had 4 bigs), they have NO SF (when guarded all the SF are useless), they have NO back up SG, and they are going to have to rely on a shaky PG (I am really rooting for Bianca because I LOVE her game but she was unreliable last year when it counted). Tenn. added a player that WILL be in the running for player of the year (Stewart is the favorite, I know) in Diamond (I hate her, I am a Duke fan). Welcomes back a 6'6 Russell who did SUCK her freshman year but with all the scorers around her she will ONLY need to guard the paint and rebound (plus she can play off of Graves so that should help her. All she needs to do is make layups and let graves do all the nice moves). Gains a good PG in Cooper and returns ALOT of proven players. The only way that Tenn. doesn't win the SEC is if TENN. beats themselves (IMO). What I mean is, they have ALOT of talent but even more PERSONALITIES. Can they come together to win games and not fight each other? Diamond has proven that she can put a team on her back with NO coach. Holly is a descent coach so she has NO excuses this year. Dawn is a good coach but she too makes some questionable calls as well.

Next year, we can talk about the EPIC battles that South Carolina and Tenn will have (South Carolina will have scorers from ALL positions once Gray and Davis becomes active) but this year, I just do not see it. Im hoping for good games but I think Tenn is too deep and too talented (ESPECIALLY offense wise).

If holly doesn't make it to the FF this year....it's confirmed, she isn't a good coach.
