Interesting quotes from McGraw and VanDerveer...

Quote:

VanDerveer said she would like to see a series between the Irish and Cardinal get set up.

"I know our football team does it, and I think it would be a really good thing," VanDerveer said of taking on the Irish. "Muffet does a fabulous job. They have a great program, and I think it would be a good thing to get going. I'm saying that before we play them. I might change my mind after."

McGraw, though, doesn't like to coach in games that involve friends.

"We talked about going west, but we've been going to Southern California basically for recruiting, for recruiting players in Southern California," McGraw said. "I'm not looking to set up a series with Stanford. I don't like to play people I know well. I try to stay away from that."

Huh

Also worth noting this game involved two pairs of ex-high school teammates.

Hannah Huffman (Notre Dame) vs. Erica Payne (Stanford) - from Cardondelet High School - not that either gets that much playing time...

Amber Orrange (Stanford) vs. Brianna Turner (Notre Dame) - from Westbury Christian High School in Houston.

Turner went there two years, but then went to Manvel High School where she won a state championship.

It must be nice being in the east, there's so many more quality opponents around you that you can play.

I guess that explains why she doesn't mind going up against Geno.

This is the first time I've ever heard of behavior like this from a coach. When it comes to poker, I have the same mindset. I will play at a casino among strangers, but refuse to play at the kitchen table among friends. There are moves and idiosyncrasies in poker that may be frowned upon among friends.

Yeah, she's always said that. Doesn't like to play against people that have been on her staff or Jim Foster is another one.

She has certainly refused to schedule former assistants and expressed her discomfort when they faced Penn State and Coquese Washington a couple years ago. But I didn't know it extended beyond that.

I wonder how many coaches and who she considers enough of a friend to not want to play them. She has also said publicly that she doesn't have that many friends in the coaching fraternity. Maybe she avoids making them for just this reason because she doesn't like coaching against them.

I guess I will be the only one to say that is a silly reason. Very odd rationale. So much so that there must be more behind it. And who among us even knew they were "friends"? They are certainly not close. Tara is far closer to Pat, Vivian, Dawn and Jim Foster and she has set of a series with all of them.

I want the series to grow the game. Plus, perhaps it will encourage Tara to improve the offensive scheme. More read and react and motion with her personnel. Whatever my feelings about ND, I think Muffet runs a beautiful offense for the women's game.

I guess she doesn't mind at all going up against Duke at least twice a season. #nolovelost
