No only is this terribly sad for all involved, but the initial investigation shows neither young woman was wearing a seatbelt. How anyone in this day and age would not wear a seatbelt just floors me. I remember watching those awful crash videos in driver's ed and vowing never to forget.
The stretch of roadway Shannise was driving is going up a hill, and there's a bit of right-hand jog in the roadway where she crossed the center line. She must have kept driving straight ahead instead and probably didn't see oncoming traffic due to the crest of the hill.
Toxicology results are due in a few days. I would expect WCSD to check her texting records also.

I read the comments and it is apparent that stretch of road is a death trap. Because of the deaths, that stretch is being rebuilt later this summer.

My heart goes out to the family. I know how they feel and will never really get over it, just learn to live with losing a daughter. I lost a daughter in a similar wreck only she was the driver of the car that got hit. She was wearing her seat belt. Again my prayers got out to the family....

The investigation was wrapped up, and it's not good.

Police believe Heady was driving 77 mph northbound on Hewitt Road when she went straight instead of following the curve of the road. She crossed the center line and struck a 2012 Dodge Avenger nearly head-on.
Several teammates said Heady had a tendency to speed, and one said she's been scared with Heady behind the wheel.
The road has a 45 mph speed limit and a suggested limit of 30 mph at the curve.
Heady had a blood-alcohol level of .205 percent, more than twice the legal limit for driving, at the time of the crash, according to toxicology reports. Hopkins had a BAC of .183 percent.

that is REAL drunk driving.
still, pretty stupid not to wear seat belts.
thankfully the jerk didn't kill the other guy, although he surely suffered enough.

A .205 alcohol level is presumptive of an alcoholic as a non alcoholic would not even be able to start the car much less drive
