The draw for the this summer's tournament was held today:
http://www.fiba.com/news/pr-n3--draw-results-for-2015-fiba-u19-womens-world-championship

Group A: Netherlands, Russia, Asia 3 (currently vacant because Japan's basketball federation is suspended because two men's pro league each claims to be the legitimate top league in the country), Argentina
Group B: China, Spain, United States, Egypt
Group C: Canada, Belgium, France, Mali
Group D: South Korea, Australia, Serbia Brazil

That means that we at least get to see a relatively highly-anticipated game in the group stage when the USA takes on Spain. Of course in the group round, teams have been known to hold back and save their full bag of tricks for knockout stages. Billy Donovan will have a similar group game against Croatia on the Men's side.

Here is the tournament format:
http://www.fiba.com/world/u19women/2015/competitionformat

Team USA tryouts run from May 14th through May 17th.

Actually China is pretty good also. They have some great length but have been inconsistent so it depends which shows up on game day.

The U18 staff is carried over to the U19 level to nobody's surprise so it's Dawn with Kim and Jeff again:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2015/04/wu19-coaches-announced.aspx

One would have to hope that tryout rosters will be finalized and released soon.

The tryout roster has been announced with one week to spare:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2015/05/wu19-trials-roster-announced.aspx

The breakdown is 13 collegians, 12 incoming freshman, and 9 who will still be in high school next year.

Fresh off back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament, CSUN women's basketball head coach Jason Flowers has been named a court coach for the 2015 USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Trials from May 14-17 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Flowers, who just concluded his fifth season at the helm of the Matadors, will help Team USA select the squads that will participate in the 2015 USA U19 World Championship, U.S. Pan American Games and USA World University Games.

Flowers, along with Northern Colorado's Kamie Ethridge, who was also selected as a court coach, will assist the coaching staffs in leading drills, skills sessions and scrimmages during staggered sessions.

Seems really light on guard play.

Dangerfield (and Cox will be HS Seniors) and Ortiz (solid freshman season) are your only PG's.

Durr may slide over to play some 1 if needed? And have Samuelson and Moore play some 2? I know Moore is more of a wing, but a solid bandhandller and good playmaker.

Snapshot from coaches and admin at try outs:

Wilson will anchor the paint.
Samuelson will stretch the floor.

Both will be on the floor and can be moved to several positions.

Durr will be PG if she is healthy. She may be out for 3 on 3 due to her injury.

Ortiz will be there to take her place. She is solid, talks and does what coaches ask of her.

The posts will duke it out. White has the experience, works her butt off and is unselfish. Anigwe probably will outwork Cox but the practices will provide great battles.

Collier provides the hustle plays with Moore coming off bench as she did previously.

Thomas is a gunner in the midrange and around the basket but could provide some quick buckets off the bench.

Stevens is the tall tall that they always keep in case there is a really tall player they need to match up with but she is a little soft so may be there to see if she can provide a little shooting.

Dangerfield the youngster will learn as they look ahead to next U19, like Cox.

One of the competition names their final squad as Australia announced rosters for the Gems and Emus. As an aside, it really is sad that there will not be a full strength Emu squad this summer, which would have helped create the deepest U19 tournament on the Men's side. At the U17 level (still unnamed team, you can vote for Dingoes or Goannas on the link below), they gave the USA all they could handle last summer.
http://www.basketball.net.au/emus-gems-teams-announced-fiba-u19-world-championships/

On the Gems side, familiar names include Kristy Wallace and Alicia Froling, with Alanna Smith being the person that you might want to be familiar with before the next NCAA season.

She's already been replaced by Erin Boley on the 3x3 team. Don't know what that says about her u19 availability.

As an aside, the US men beat Croatia in OT in the U19 gold medal game today. Really good game. You might want to see it if you get a chance (might be available on WatchESPN).

Croatia probably should have won it. With 4.5 seconds in regulation with Croatia down 1, a Croatia player was fouled while shooting. Had he made both, Croatia would likely have won. But he missed the second, and the US finally took over in OT for the win.

Interesting tidbit here as the team apparently scrimmaged the Pan Am team twice and split the games:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2015/07/usa-u19-world-championship-team-ready-for-next-test.aspx

It will be off to Spain for an exhibition tournament before heading to Russia.

That IS an interesting tidbit. After winning the first scrimmage (74-68), the U19 team kept the second very close as well (73-70). Did the Pan Am team play hard? You would think that the significant age difference would make the games much less competitive. It was basically upper classmen (established college stars) competing against rising sophomores, incoming freshman, and high school students. I would have loved to have seen the box scores.

Is it correct that Samuelson is not traveling to Europe or playing on the U19 team? Anyone know why? And are they only taking 11? No one else was called in to take her place?

KLS had knee problems at the end of the high school season.

What kind of knee problems? Are you saying that is why she isn't with the team?

I had read that she left because of a family issue.
