We're pretty stoked here in Harrisonburg that our own Angela Mickens is on the list, not that we have many illusions about her actually getting the award. JMU is, after all, a mid-major, besides which Angela is a junior.....but hey, it's nice to get a little recognition! Very Happy

If it's a "best guard in the country" list, where the fuck is Aliyyah Handford?

If it's a "best PG in the country list", why the fuck is Damika Martinez on here?

It doesn't matter, since neither of them are going to win. Smile

IMHO Allen is the best pure PG and checks all the intangibles. Boyd will probably win it because she is a senior

I think I've had this argument before. To YOU it doesn't matter, but to a player that might not get a lot of national attention, it might be a nice thing to spice up a basketball resume.

No Promise Amukamara?
No Hrynko?
No Mullaney?

From the article:
Note: This list is fluid – players can play their way onto and off of the Watch List and the Final 15

How useful is a fluid watch list, and does it change on the daily?

Maybe it should be a bigger watch list that includes the names mentioned.

Lindsay Allen would also have my vote.

I lack objectivity, but Lindsay Allen would also get my vote. She is unbelievably reliable. She scores when it's needed, but generally looks to involve others rather than score herself. When she does shoot, she is very good (58% FG overall, 43% on 3pt, 86% on FT's). She really doesn't play like a sophomore.

I would think her biggest competition would come from Jefferson and Boyd, because I do not consider Kelsey Plum a PG. Her own backcourt mate (Davis) has 20 more assists than her! Jewell Loyd has more assists per minute than Plum, and I would not consider Jewell a PG.

Baylor's Niya Johnson is leading the country in assists per game at 8.6, but she's scoring at only 6.5 PPG, which is probably also considered by the voters. The winner might need to be averaging in double figures.

Sophomore Lindsay Allen is averaging 10.7 PPG but is 38th in APG at 5.0.

Junior Moriah Jefferson is averaging 11.4 PPG but is 61st in APG at 4.6.

I'd favor seniors just as a general tie-breaking rule, and we have two deserving seniors in my opinion. Brittany Boyd is third in APG at 7.6 and averages 13.7 PPG. Samantha Logic is fifth in APG at 7.4 and averages 11.7 APG. Logic is on the higher ranked team and has a great name.

I think the award is just for PG's. And Damika is on the list. She is the 5th player listed.

Any list ought to be fluid, or it's going to be useless. I'm guessing it's analyzed and reordered weekly at least. But that's just a guess.

The list is so fluid it must not have been there before. Wink

Sue Bird won the award 2000-2002, so there's no basis to say that it should go to a senior. But maybe you could argue that few PGs existed before then (except Lieberman). Wink

Taurasi won 2003-2004. See above. Was she even really a PG?

Toliver won in 2008 as a junior.

The standard seemed to be low in 2010 when Andrea Riley won. It says she averaged 6 pts, 1.8 ast, 1.2 reb in 19 mpg. Is this a joke?

Diggins won in 2012-2013, bringing more modern proof that the award needn't go to a senior.

Exactly. I love watching Damika play. She's one of the most phenomenal scorers I've ever seen. But pass? Ahahahahahahahahahaha. (Same goes for many of the super scorers on this list, I suspect, but Damika is the only one I watch regularly.)

Short list:
Brittany Boyd
Lindsay Allen
Moriah Jefferson
Lexie Brown
Samantha Logic

It will go to one of these 5. Kelsey Mitchell and Kelsey Plum are not a PGs. If it were awarded based on a great game vs UConn, Orrange is the no-brainer winner.

Well, at least Syessence Davis is a real point guard. She won't win, but she'd much rather pass than shoot.

Kelsey Mitchell IS a point guard. Interesting though that BOTH of Ohio State's guards are on the list. Since they both average about 35 minutes a game, the definition of point guard must be pretty broad.

Sims won it last year, for those claiming a scorer like Plum or Mitchell can't.

I think the winner will come from the group of Allen, Jefferson and Plum.

I guess the notion of including everyone on the watch list is completely consistant with the modern notion of giving everyone a participation trophy.

I vote for Niya Johnson. #1 in the country in assists per game with almost 9, and #3 in assist to turnover ratio with almost 4 assists to ever 1 turnover. She even grabs about 5 rebounds per game which is very good for a point guard.

Brittany Boyd and Sam Logic is right up there too. Both average double figure points. Boyd averages 7.6 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game while Logic averages 6.8 rebounds and 7.5 assists.

One underrated player no one is talking about is Kissel from Pitt. Scores almost 20 a night but also 5 rebounds and 5 assists a night plus a very good assist to turnover atio.

Kelsey Plum plays PG for UW about 1/3 of the time I'd guesstimate.. without knowing how you'd actually find that out.

Rachel Theriot not getting enough love in this thread. If you're going to nominate a B1G PG I'd pick her ahead of Brown at least, maybe Logic too.

She is definitely really good, but I think I would take Logic over the other two. Big 10 has six players on this watch list and I think Logic may be the only senior? Really strong guard play and if Banham was healthy she would probably be on this. Logic shoots a little better from the field than Theriot but Theriot is better from deep and the charity stripe. Theriot scores 5 more points per game but Logic averages almost 3 rebounds more per game, a little over two more assists per game, more than double the amount of steals, and a little better assist to turnover ratio so it is really close. I don't think team success should matter in these individual awards but unfortunately voters do care and since Iowa is ranked higher it probably plays a factor.

But to show how deep this group is, you could argue Logic may not be the best candidate in her own state. Nikki Moody is having a great year too.
