Three years after coming from Wake Forest. That rebuild job didn't seem to be working, and they pulled the trigger.

From the Univ. of North Texas' website:

Quote:
The Mean Green finished with a 5-24 record this season and failed to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. In his three seasons with North Texas, Petersen's teams compiled an overall record of 28-61, including a 20-34 conference record between the Conference USA and Sun Belt.

Are we seriously down to 3 years to turn around a program??? How long before administrators want you to snap your fingers, twirl around 3 times and produce a winner?

3 years is crazy.

Petersen's teams went 11-22, 12-18 & 5-24. He wasn't going to turn things around next year either. A direct cause of his woes was his inability to retain his best players. Three of UNT's best young players, who would have all been upperclassmen this year, left during his tenure as coach.

Plus, this is the same guy who was so stubborn that he REFUSED to let his players guard MT's Keke Stewart last season outside the arc. At 6-1, Stewart was mainly a wide-bodied post player. But she had demonstrated a smooth outside shot through the season and proceeded to hit 11-26 from behind the line in that game. Petersen basically DARED her to shoot from behind the arc as the defenders, who were VISIBLY pissed at the instruction, sagged 5-7 feet off. It was a joke of a coaching job that night.

Still. 3 years is a slippery slope. I don't like it at all.

In lieu of Amanda Butler receiving a two-year extension, which runs through 2019, there has been some changes to her staff. Per multiple sources, David Lowery and Angela Crosby will not be retained as assistants.

Mike Flynn has tweeted a rumor that Duke is in the process of buying out Coach P and want to hire Courtney Banghart of Princeton.

Wouldn't surprise be, but is Courtney the correct hire. Has no big time recruiting experience.

Comes as no surprise that Flynn would tweet out a rumor like about JPM...it's no secret that there is no love lost between those 2.

Duke always recruits well, I don't think that would be a problem.

Plus, you can always hire assistants who are good recruiters.

ahh the old cut off your nose to spite your face approach. see this a lot in the pros...wont fire you but you need to fire everyone under you and start anew (normally with the adminstration either doing or being very influential in the picking.) at least some action was taken at least

Neither did McCallie. In fact she said she hated it. If JPM could turn it around and become the best recruiter in program history, no reason a good, smart coach like Banghart could do the same. #dukerecruitsitself

Interesting that Coach P has tweeted only three times since December. If memory serves correctly, she has tweeted regularly throughout earlier seasons.

Uh... yeah kinda! Will be interested to see if they promote an assistant or go with a national search. Shocked

Wow! I had a feeling it wouldn't be too much longer but I certainly didn't expect this now.

Georgia is a really, really good job. I would think a LOT of people would be interested in this one.

Rumor on a LSU board say she might be joining Nikki Caldwell staff at LSU

Are you referring to Peck? Have you forgotten her debacle at Florida? She was blessed with seniors that basically led that Purdue team to a title.

Nice observation. Did somebody finally pull the reins? What will they do next - give her a prepared statement to read at the post game presser after a loss? Every time they try to contain her, her negativity oozes out another way. Just in case you missed it, here's the sequence and the "fix."

Alleged verbal abuse of players in private -- hired a Coach K alum to observe in the presence of players
Revolving door of assistant coaches -- "stop the AC turnover" hired rubber stamps (agreement to not suggest any adjustments)
Nasty tweets -- strongly advise against tweeting, then throw down the hammer (no tweets from you and your little hubby too)
Negative statements about players at post game pressers -- [buy out rumors]
