Western Michigan 7-2
Ball State 6-3
Akron 6-3

Final Ohio 58, Kent State 44. For the first 30 minutes of this game, it was hard to tell which team was 17-3 and which was 3-17. The Bobcats came out as if they had been sniffing 3-ball catnip, doing little on offense except shooting and missing longballs. The Flashes exploited their advantage in size inside, mostly in the person of 6'4" CiCi Shannon, and, combined with some sharp midrange shooting from Melanee Stubbs and a couple of threes from Larissa Lurken, forged a 25-23 lead at the half.

More of the same followed for the first few minutes of the second half, but then Ohio, mixing drives to the rim with the outside shot, pulled out to a modest lead. The game was still in doubt when Kiyanna Black went off, hitting four consecutive threes in the space of about two minutes to end the suspense with five minutes remaining. Ohio didn't produce much offense after Black's burst, but, efficient as they are at bleeding the clock with a lead, didn't need to.

Kent State has hamstrung itself with turnovers all year, and tonight was no different. 25 TOs was the toll, coming in all shapes and sizes. Unless the Flashes can get those under control, they won't be winning many more games this season.

interesting nugget of info. is reigning mac player of the year crystal bradford is in street clothes & will not play...

CMU head coach Sue Guevara confirmed after the game that it is Bradford's knee that is bothering her, and said that she was "day-to-day". After one of CMU's games last week, she said that Bradford had been unable to practice because of the knee.

Final Ohio 71, Bowling Green 46. Ohio's leading scorers, Kiyanna Black and Quiera Lampkins, were both held to single digit scoring, but there were plenty of other Bobcats to pick up the slack tonight. Kat Yelle led them with 13 points, including 3-3 from behind the arc. All ten available players put in double digit minutes to spread the load, and all but one of them scored.

The Falcons are desperately shorthanded due to injuries, and tonight it got worse as Jasmine Matthews did not dress. What's left is almost exclusively shooting guards, and it's hard to cobble much of an offense out of that. It's also hard to play post defense. Ohio's only two legit post players, Lexi Baldwin and Jasmine Weatherspoon, who had combined for just 3 points against Kent State, totaled 17 tonight. They also accounted for 15 rebounds as Ohio swept the boards by a 51-28 count.

It's on to Miami on Saturday for the Bobcats. The RedHawks finally registered their first conference win tonight against Kent State after ten straight losses.

Above is a summary of UT v CMU.UT won, 61-48. Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriet, fr, scored 19pts, 5 of which were 3's.Inma had a signature game with 17pts, 8 rebs, and 6 assists. Rocket defense seems to be stepping up. Would they have won if Bradford played? Would like to think so.

That games bunches the MAC West even more, with Toledo tied for 3rd w/3 other teams.

Perhaps the more telling game will be the upcoming road game with Akron and a full roster on Saturday.

Sorry for my absence but health care trumps all.

Akron v Toledo- 82-56, respectively. Pain, clenched fists.

Defense still weak, both O/D rebounds dominated by Akron. Some freshmen looking good on the positive side; Jay Harriet Bravo(16 pts) and Kessler, and Woody. Imna looked tired which makes sense due to her minutes and production throughout the season. She sits at top of most stats.

North IL v Toledo on Wednesday. Education day w/11:am game.

Final Ohio 67, Miami 45. Quiera Lampkins scored 7 straight points to provide a first half spark, and Kiyanna Black hit back to back triples to send the Bobcats on their way in the second half. An uneven game for Ohio, who had scoring droughts of about 7 minutes in the first half and 5 in the second. Part of the dry spells was due to foul trouble for both Lampkins and Black, but Hannah Boesinger came off the bench to fight for both points (9) and rebounds (5) before she fouled out.

Miami has a lot of size, but not a lot of quickness, and shot very poorly today. The bright spot for the RedHawks was freshman Baleigh Reid, who led all scorers with 16. She was able to get penetration against Ohio's defense all day, and certainly is one of the best freshmen I have seen in the MAC this year.

Miami spent some money upgrading Millett Hall, and the place certainly looks better. Mainly they screwed in a lot more light bulbs, which helps to transform the dungeon-like atmosphere of the past, where players seemed to be playing under spotlights. New red upholstery on the seats helped too.

Bowling Green is just not Bowling Green. I know Ball State just gave them a beat down this afternoon, but BG really did not put up that much of a fight. The teams of a few years back, even with the injuries, still would have been competitive.

Ball State came out of the gate in a hurry and opened the Big Can. Never relinquished the lead and the game was tied for only a minute. State led in all the stats, including winning the rebound war 38-27. They also got five blocks during the game and Sallee bitched about it in the press conference. More telling was the assist/TO stats, State won both 17-9 and 11-13 respectively. The Cards pounded 20 points in the paint and made BG pay with 20 points off turnovers.

The day belonged to Shelbie Justice, who not only led all scorers with 21 points, but she also joined the 1000 point club as well. BG was led by Deborah Hoeskstra's 17 points.

Standings after games of 2/14:

Ohio 11-1
Ball State 9-3
Akron 9-4
Western Michigan 9-4
Buffalo 7-5
Toledo 6-6
Central Michigan 6-6
Northern Illinois 6-6
Eastern Michigan 5-6
Kent State 2-10
Bowling Green 2-11
Miami 1-11

Crystal Bradford missed her second straight game with a knee injury. Jas'Mine Bracey played despite a high ankle sprain sustained last Wednesday, but CMU still lost by 21 at EMU.

Kent State won its second MAC game, upsetting NIU in DeKalb.

EMU has a tough week ahead. They play at Miami on Tuesday in a makeup game, then continue on to Ohio to play on Wednesday. Then it's back to Ypsi for a game against Toledo on Saturday.

Final Eastern Michigan 73, Ohio 61. The Eagles win their third game in a row and snap Ohio's 10 game winning streak. EMU shot an unconscious percentage both from three (9-18) and from the free throw line (20-21). Over half of Ohio's shot attempts were from behind the arc, where they were just 10-36, and they only got to the line 6 times.

Against a 2-3 zone, Ohio seemed unable to do much except to pass the ball around the perimeter until someone fired up a three with a defender closing in. The Eagles' quick guards -- Cha Sweeney, Janay Morton and Jamaica Bucknor -- contested the three well enough to keep Ohio's shooters off-balance. Ohio's posts contributed very little scoring, with just 4 points between them. Quiera Lampkins was the only player who provided consistent points in the paint, ending the night with 17.

On the other end, EMU's shots from distance were nearly always made with the shooter's feet set and time to make the shot, the result of sharp passing and credible inside scoring threats that Ohio had to respect. At 6'4", Rachel Kehoe gave Ohio trouble all night, both on offense and defense. Sweeney's 23 points and Bucknor's 17 were due in no small part to Kehoe's presence in the middle.

Today we have Toledo at EMU at 2pm. The winner will hold 3rd place, starting to loosen up the overlaps in the very competitive West Division. May Jay-Ann, Inma, and Breanna Harris add to the other players scores and shoot lights out. A little defensive pressure would help, too.

Final Central Michigan 63, Western Michigan 51. Crystal Bradford returned from missing three games with her knee injury. She didn't start, and only played briefly in the first half due to picking up 2 quick fouls. She started the second half, but missed all of her shots until about 6 minutes remained in the game, when she scored 8 points to spark the Chips to the win. Her final shooting line was 4-13, 0-3 from three. She looked to me like she was moving pretty well.

And be careful with those pink uniforms! In the Miami at Buffalo game currently ongoing, Buffalo's twins, Liisa and Katherine Ups, wore the uni assigned to the other and cost the Bulls a tech when one of them entered the game wearing the wrong number.

EDIT: Miami won just its second conference game of the year by defeating Buffalo, 78-68.

Toledo wins 81 to EMU's 72, at EMU. Looks like the Rockets may be peaking at about the right time. Was hearing unconfirmed info about wins and losses today but will return w/stats, etc... as they come in.

Above is a news summary of the game and includes stats. Sophie definitely produced her best soph. game, one her size and skill always promised, with 22 pts and 11 rebs.
Inma again had a double double, w/16 pts and 12 rebs. Janice added 17 pts, Brenae 12 and freshman Jay-Ann gave us 10 pts, all needed and hopefully repeatable in the games and MAC Tourney yet to come.

Not sure yet on MAC standings

Final Ohio 71, Akron 55. The Bobcats bounce back from the EMU loss to pick up a road win, led by Kiyanna Black's 31 points. She proved to be too much to handle, as Zip guards weren't quick enough to keep her from penetrating and Zip posts didn't have the shot-blocking ability to keep her from scoring in the paint. The four threes she hit kept the defense even further off balance.

Akron committed 23 turnovers, 15 in the first half. 12 of these came on Ohio steals as the Bobcats focused on intercepting passes intended for Sina King. King still had a double-double of 16 and 12, but she had nowhere near the impact she had in the first meeting of the teams when she scored 27.

Despite the win, Ohio continued its shooting slide, hitting on just 7 of 26 three-point attempts. The fatigue of the long season and the pressure of unexpected success might have something to do with that.

An unusual technical foul was called in the game, when Akron was called for having 6 players on the floor. Can't recall having seen that before.

Seedings through 14 games; with 4 left to play:

1. Ohio 12-2
2. Ball State 11-3
3. Western Michigan 9-5
4. Akron 9-5
5. Buffalo 8-6
6. Toledo 8-6
7. Eastern Michigan 7-7
8. Central Michigan 7-7
9. Northern Illinois 6-8
10. Kent State 3-11
11. Bowling Green 2-12
12. Miami 2-12

I broke the ties as follows:

WMU and Akron split their season series 1-1, but Western has the "best win", over #1 Ohio.

Buffalo and Toledo split their season series 1-1, but UB has the best win, over #2 Ball State.

EMU is 1-0 head-to-head with CMU.

Bowling Green is 1-0 against Miami.

Anybody else have these figured differently?

Above is an article on Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriet, pre-season pick by College Madness to be MAC WBB Frosh of the year and now with a West POW designation. She had 6 treys in her first of last week's games, w/other stats cited. Four other Toledo players have received POWs this season.

With four games to go, Toledo is on the rise, hopefully to peak during the Tournament. The chess board is "fluid", to quote an ESPN writer.
