Gotta say, I'm a little surprised. Could have taken the easy way.

Nine minutes to go in the first half, ND leads 22-9.

Mich appears to be offensively challenged.

Yet only down by 7 points with their leading scorer out of the game with a knee injury.

haven't seen much of Michigan but am impressed with Goree. Seems pretty talented, athletic, demanding the ball.

ND caught that DePaul free throw disease.

I'm surprised the university allowed them to do it

Shannon Smith went to the locker room with ice strapped to her knee. I hope it's not a season-ending injury.

Why?

I'm not surprised. This is still the school that Theodore Hesburgh built. I think it's fine.

ND must have caught some virus from DePaul; they're only shooting 42% from the free throw line. Very Happy

That's good to see.

Michigan's offense seems to have been reduced to firing threes, and getting putbacks. Not a lot of offensive playmaking as far as I can see.

Flaherty's not hitting her threes, and that is a big hurdle for U-M.

Are there players out with injuries? Mich was playing pretty well in stretches last year. I thought they would be better than they appear to be this year.

No. We're just small.

Final 70-50, ND wins. Lindsay Allen was high scorer for ND with 17 pts on 7/8 shooting. ND shot 52%, Mich shot 35%. Tough to overcome that differential.

48-24 advantage on pts in the paint for ND as well.

Reimer really struggled. 2-6 shooting with 7 turnovers. I guess she misses Turner more than anyone. Mabrey had another tough game as well.

Seems weird that Loyd didn't have much of an impact. At least Westbeld and Allen really stepped up.

Now exams and 2 relatively easy games (St. Joseph's and UCLA) before the conference season starts. Of course there's still one more OOC game left against Tennessee that's embedded in the conference season.

I think that was by design. I expect Muffett knows they need to diversify the offense and wanted Loyd to take fewer shots. It's not like she was missing lots of shots. She shot 50%, she just took fewer shots. McGraw has talked about how they can't have Loyd scoring all the points. Getting more scoring from Allen, Westbeld, and Cable will serve them well when Turner returns.

Maybrey needs to settle down and start hitting some shots. She's been cold as ice. And she looks like she's pressing.

Also good to see Wright play more. They really need her now with Turner out, and will need her for the rest of the year too. Hopefully the ankle is feeling better.

Do you know if Thompson is injured?

Art, I assume that Diamond is injured because she was on the bench and in street clothes. If it were academics or a team discipline issue, she would not be on the bench.

I agree that Jewell shot well, and I'm actually OK with her number of shots taken. It's just that if Muffet was trying to diversify the offense, why didn't Jewell get more assists? If teams are going to collapse on Loyd, she needs to be able to find open teammates, and those teammates should be moving effectively without the ball, getting themselves in place for a shot. I was also disappointed in Jewell's rebound numbers. She usually grabs more when she plays that many minutes (30). I realize that ND didn't need her today, but games like these are great times to work on Jewell assisting when teams collapse on her.

That's the second straight game Diamond has been in street clothes but I have seen no explanation. I don't know if Muffett is ready to give her real minutes or not. She spoke highly of her development at the start of the season. But if she is, now is the time they need her with Turner out. I assume she's injured. Maybe there will be a question asked in today's post game press conference.

As for Loyd, the other possibility is that she is used in part as a decoy to draw the defense opening things up more for the other 4 players, in which case the idea would be to keep the ball in the hands of other players, especially Allen.

Don't know if that was intentional or not, but it is a possibility.

Guy that sang The National Anthem was a city councilman from Fort Wayne.

I don't think that was a coincidence. Smile

(He did a GREAT job! One of my favorites.)

Here he is at a baseball stadium, starts about 7:00. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzwvZC0BOnQ

And at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum (where basket all games would be played, notice the weird sized scoreboard - taller than is it wide).

VERY strong comments about the I Can't Breathe shirts from Muffett during her press conference.

I think Father Hesburgh would be proud.
