Turner is not the first option on Notre Dame, Mitchell is and there is a big difference especially for a freshman.

She needs to be in the conversation.

I guess you missed it but it was decided months ago that she would never be more than a role-playing bench player.

Mitchell is taking 33% her teams FG attempts. In comparison, last year DeShields took 24.33% of UNC's shots.

The only thing working against her is a lack of face time on national TV. Turner and Wilson are so far getting the media attention.

And the lack of team success. Ohio State doesn't look like an NCAA team.

Kia Nurse, Brianna Turner, and Rebecca Greenwell look to be very solid thus far, and they are each on teams that will most likely be in the spotlight for the rest of the season. A'ja Wilson from South Carolina will only get better. I also would not be surprised to see great things out of the gang from Louisville. I can't wait to see what they do today against Kentucky.

Cal's Mikayla Cowling is off to a very good start as well.

Kelsey Mitchell
A'ja Wilson
Rebecca Camp
Victoria Vivians
Imani Watkins
Tyra Buss
Myisha Hines-Allen
Chatrice White
Rebecca Greenwell

This is a handful that could be in the mix if they keep up their current play.

You have to add Ariel Atkins to this.

She's a sophomore. She played all the games last season and even started a bunch.

I looked at a bunch of stats after almost two months, but there are too many to post.

I'd say the three leaders for FOY as of now, in no particular order, are Kelsey Mitchell, Brianna Turner and A'ja Wilson.

A different factor, but since these awards seem to be based largely on perception, I'd say (without looking at any stats) that the one other freshman getting a lot of visibility and publicity is Duke's Azur Stevens.

Too bad Ariel Atkins got hurt.

Not sure where Kelsey Mitchell was ranked and too lazy to look it up. Depending on Mitchell's ranking, Azura' might win for rookie play that far exceeds her ranking.

Mitchell's biggest statistical asset is that she is leading not only all freshman, but all of D1, in scoring at 25.7 ppg. The next freshman in scoring is Rachel Camp at 17.2 ppg.

When you look at efficiency, shooting percentages and rebounding, Turner and Wilson both jump near the top.

Mitchell was #1 by one of the services I believe, top 5 in all of them. But I don't think they award it based on who overachieves the most. Besides, Stevens was pretty highly rated herself.

I was promoting that fictitious award in jest. I believe Azura' was top 25. But Wilson & Turner were 1-2. With Calhoun gone from Duke, we'll see what Azura' can do from the wing, which is where she likes playing. Match up nightmare. I imagine on defense, she'll stay at the top of the zone - the only defense Duke plays these days.

Sydney Lamberty at Creighton won the Big East freshman of the week award four times in a row. Getting better every day, said Creighton's media man (also a bit of consolation for losing two seniors to knee injuries).

Venson highlights from WF game. Look like only playing 1 1/2 season of high school and 1 season of club play works
