I was just reading through this thread and I saw this quote about charter flights. I have traveled with the MD team several times and the charter flight is usually on the return trip, right after the game. They have a head count and get a charter plane according to that count. On all the flights I've been on with them, these are not big planes. Even a short flight back from Miami left me feeling like a sardine jammed in a small can and I'm only 5'5". Imagine what a player who is 6'2-5" feels.

Not sure what planes you guys were using but with all the charter flights I have been on, there was plenty of room. In addition to private jets, we had charter flights on 50 or more passenger planes that were Northwest, US Air, American, etc and were part of their regional fleets. With a travel party of 25ish people, that leaves quite a bit of room with most having 2 seats to themselves.

I also think that it's important not to discount how much easier it is to get to and from a charter - as pointed out above, no security, etc. - which saves time and just makes it less of a hassle in general.

Probably the two biggest benefits from using charters are point-to-point travel ( No stops, no transfers, no long bus rides to or from hub airports. Most games simply aren't played between teams with scheduled nonstop air service between their home towns.) and schedule (Leave when you want, fly home after the game, especially night games, rather than hotel stay and killing much of the next day waiting for your flight and travelling.).

Getting bussed right to the plane, no security, no waiting, no lines, no screaming babies, no drunks, no fighting for overhead bins, etc. all make it much more relaxing and enjoyable.

It's an enormous improvement over the alternatives.

Nice in-depth feature on Indiana's Tyra Buss:

I think that several teams have a solid core group of starters but the challenge will be to find solid depth.

Maryland seems to have the strongest bench thus far. They may be the team that has to tighten up its rotation as they have played a lot of players thus far.

Iowa has a solid starting five returning the four starters from last year and adding super-quick frosh Whitney Jennings to the starting line-up to replace the graduated Theairra Taylor. Doolittle will have to log a lot of minutes in the post unless someone steps up their game.

Michigan State was looking for a someone to augment the all around play of Aerial Powers and Tori Jankoska and may have found that recently with improvement of Becca Mills. Back-up post Jasmine Hines, who was playing solidly, has missed the past three games.

Nebraska has six new players on the roster and none of them have shown consistently to back up the starters, who are a very tight and functional unit.

I haven't followed Rutgers to know their depth. When I look at stats on their site, i get last years numbers.

Try this: This year

RU basically runs 8 deep most of the time - Canty, Copper, Hollivay, Laney and Scaife to start, with Davis, Evans and Butts getting most of the time off the bench. It's really, though, a five-player non-post rotation plus a 3-player post rotation, since Evans and Butts pretty much only substitute for Hollivay and each other. Stringer seems to be trying to see if she can give Hernandez more time, as she's played her in some situations when the game was not already decided. Some people think Parker might get more time as the season progresses.

Someone on the RU board noticed that C. Vivian Stringer has the second-most Big Ten wins of any coach. With the win against Indiana, she's now got 170, to 176 for Rene Portland. Barring a huge surprise, she should pass Portland around (hopefully before!) the halfway mark in the B1G season.

What's also interesting about the list is how few active coaches are on it.

Here's the top 10, as of this morning:

1. Rene Portland 176 (Penn State)
2. C. Vivian Stringer 170 (Iowa, Rutgers)
3. Karen Langeland 156 (Michigan State)
4. Lisa Bluder 139 (Iowa)
5. Jim Foster 136 (Ohio State)
6. Don Perrelli 135 (Northwestern)
7. Nancy Darsch 134 (Ohio State)
8. Lin Dunn 120 (Purdue)
9. Pam Borton 104 (Minnesota)
10. Theresa Grentz 101 (Illinois)

The other active coaches in the top 20:

11. Sharon Versyp 97 (Indiana, Purdue)
15. Suzy Merchant 82 (Michigan State)
16. Coquese Washington 69 (Penn State)

Brenda Frese, of course, previously coached in the Big Ten, but she was not in the top 20 going into the season.

Absolutely love her game...key to beating Minny is to get her in foul trouble. This is going to be a very interesting year in the Big Ten.

Two days into the regular season, two upsets, a great come-from-behind win . . . the B1G is already plenty interesting!

Surprising. I'm thinking he was there far fewer seasons than I realized.

Jessica Shepard, a Husker commit, out for year with torn ACL
Quote:
Shepard, ranked third in the nation by ESPN.com among recruits from the class of 2015, acknowledged the injury on Twitter after the game.

Shepard, who started the season 15th on the state's all-time scoring list, had climbed to fourth this season. She scored 305 points as a senior and will finish her career with 2,229.

The all-time scoring leader is Darcy Stracke of Chambers, who finished with 2,752 points in 1996. Shepard needed to average about 32 points per game this season to catch Stracke.

In nine games, Shepard was averaging 33.8.

I was surprised, too. He was at OSU for 11 years.

This comes out of the B1G media guide, which is available along with the media guides for all of the teams in the conference here.

RU guard Briyona Canty will be out against Ohio State with a bone bruise to her knee. She's listed as week-to-week, and was seen at an RU men's basketball game on crutches and with her knee immobilized.

It's likely Syessence Davis will start in her place. Davis already is averaging 26.5 mpg as the primary substitute for the non-post players, with 5.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 3.7 apg. If I were guessing, I'd say the new first sub will be Cynthia Hernandez, who is something of a 3-point specialist, but frosh Shrita Parker also may see more time.

Me, too. As I wrote on the RU board, I won't call it great news, but it's so far from the worst possible news that it does kind of make me happy.

From MSU post-game notes yesterday, "This is the first time since the 2001-02 season that Michigan State has started Big Ten play 0-2." (McCallie's 2nd year)

I don't see how it will be anyone but Mitchell...it's not even close. She has just been given all the time, the ball in her hands, lots of shots, etc.

There are quite a few talented frosh in the B1G this year and several more signed for next year. Exciting times for the league.

Updated Standings (as of 1/5/15):

1. #23 Minnesota - 3-0, 14-1
#17 Iowa - 2-0, 11-2
#12 Maryland - 2-0, 11-2
4. Northwestern - 2-1, 12-2
Michigan - 2-1, 10-4
Ohio State - 2-1, 10-5
Purdue - 2-1, 9-5
8. Illinois - 1-1, 10-4
9. Indiana - 1-2, 11-3
#24 Rutgers - 1-2, 10-4
Wisconsin - 1-2, 5-8
12. #19 Nebraska - 0-2, 10-3
Michigan State - 0-3, 8-6
Penn State - 0-3, 3-11

This week has some very interesting games (then again, most weeks will I think). Here is the schedule for the week:

Tuesday, January 6th
Penn State @ Wisconsin - 9:00 pm BTN

Wednesday, January 7th
Michigan @ #24 Rutgers - 7:00 pm

Thursday, January 8th
Purdue @ #12 Maryland - 6:30 pm BTN
Ohio State @ Indiana - 7:00 pm
#17 Iowa @ Illinois - 8:00 pm
#19 Nebraska @ Mich State - 8:30 pm BTN

Saturday, January 10th
#24 Rutgers @ Penn State

Sunday, January 11th
Wisconsin @ Indiana - 2:00 pm
Ohio State @ Michigan - 2:00 pm
Purdue @ #17 Iowa - 2:00 pm BTN
#12 Maryland @ #23 Minnesota - 3:00 pm ESPN2
Mich State @ Northwestern - 3:00 pm
#19 Nebraska @ Illinois - 3:00 pm

* All times are EST

Some observations:

1. Purdue has a very tough week, on the road at #12 Maryland and #17 Iowa
2. #19 Nebraska and Mich State play each other on Thursday, both winless in the league. These are 2 of the preseason picks for top 3 and the loser will be buried deep in the league.
3. Illinois has a great opportunity ahead of it: hosting #17 Iowa and #19 Nebraska this week. They can make some noise.
4. Huge game on Sunday...Brenda Freese makes her return to Minnesota where her #12 Terrapins take on the very hot 23rd ranked Gophers. Minnesota will have the whole week to prepare.
5. Big week for Nebraska. They are scrambling a little, having gone 0-2 to start the B1G and they play both games on the road this week: MSU & Illinois.

Thanks for the update!

I would add that Thursday's game between the Terps and the Boilers is a big one too. Whitney Bays will be returning to College Park for the first time and I expect that she has something to prove.

Unfortunately she was injured alot when she played for MD, plus, at the time, MD was extremely deep in the frontcourt, so she didn't get much opportunity to play. I think the transfer was a good way for her to start over and get the PT she was looking for. At Purdue she's shown that she certainly has the talent that made Brenda recruit her in the first place. The Terps can't afford to look past this one to Minnesota.

You're welcome.

Yeah, Bays got hurt in high school (missed senior year?) so that really set her back heading into Maryland. I actually think her final schools came down to Maryland and Purdue when she made her original choice. I'm sure she will want to prove a thing or 2 as well when she gets back to College Park. I expect Maryland to handle this version of the Boilers pretty easily.
