Hearing word (unconfirmed) that there was a hot air balloon accident and Coach Doyle and possibly 2 other staff or athletic personnel are missing or dead. Still searching for information.

The balloon was one of three that had taken off from Meadow Event Park and were planning to land in a designated area. The first two balloons landed safely, but the balloon carrying the UR coaches struck a power line and caught fire. Onlookers reported seeing people jumping or falling out of the balloon.

Virginia State Police announced at a press conference this morning that they had recovered the remains of one of the three people inside the balloon’s basket and were continuing to search for the other two. VSP spokeswoman Corinne Geller said that officials had notified the families of the three individuals and were transitioning from a search and rescue operation to a recovery operation.

Assoc Head Coach Ginny Doyle and DOBO Natalie Lewis.

A member of my family played for Richmond WBB a few years ago. Tragic news.

My cousin just finished her Freshmen year on the squad. Our prayers are with the grieving families, team, athletic department, and university community. May their faith comfort and strengthen them.

This is awful. (It would be awful even if there were no WCBB connection, of course.)

According to this, it's Natalie Lewis that they're still looking for.

This is tragic for the team and the Richmond community. It was a privilege to see Ginny Doyle play for the Spiders when she initiated her 66-straight free throws made versus No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville (88-61 loss for the Spiders).

Not many schools can boast that they had an assistant coach who remained at the same school through three head coach changes. Ginny Doyle was the one who saw Bob Foley being replaced by Joanne Boyle being replaced by Michael Shafer in 16 seasons at Richmond.

Rest in peace, Ginny Doyle & Natalie Lewis.
