From ESPN:

Total revenue from the nation's top-tier college sports programs -- the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision -- has increased by about a third, fueled by ticket sales, donations and lucrative television contracts that together resulted in about $8 billion.

Interesting to include donations in that mix.

Anyway, gross revenues, not net, so not necessarily that illuminating.

Down in the article, they discussed the murky accounting practices and the increased expenditures on staff, facilities and travel. Non-profits always seek to spend enough money to break even, so more expenditures off track with more income than outgo.

This is not my experience from serving on two different non-profit boards. One of them tries to make as much money as possible, because its central mission is to support one of the Smithsonian museums through its annual surplus. The other is trying to build up its reserves and endowment, and has been working hard to cut costs wherever it can without affecting its mission.

There are, of course, other examples that don't work that way, but I wouldn't generalize quite as sweepingly as you do (or I'd find other non-profits to support).
