While being sympathetic to some of the objectives, former Northwestern quarterback CJ Bacher takes apart most of the arguments for unionization of football players at Northwestern, and argues that unionization would be mostly a bad thing:

It is, one should note, a secret ballot and the ballots are locked away while the appeal to the full NLRB is professing. Not to say it's wrong, but this is the kind of thing people have been known to lie about.

Chicago Tribune's Teddy Greenstein agreeing with the 80% "no" vote:

Most votes in America are secret, but the press and anyone else can interview or poll the voters after the vote.

Certainly, but there's a long history of people lying about these particular kinds of votes when asked by the press (or management). Again, I have no idea whether this is accurate or not; I'm just saying we shouldn't assume it is.

The next logical step is already being proposed -- unionize high school football:

"Northwestern's football program continues to shine in the classroom and in gaining the sheepskins.

"The NCAA released its latest graduation success rate scores on Thursday, and the Wildcats led all FBS teams with a 97-percent graduation rate in football. Last year, Northwestern was tied for first with Notre Dame. Northwestern also ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA academic progress report scores that were released in the summer."

I don't think that was about him being hungry, somehow. I think it's a lot more about him being another over-coddled athlete who's gotten away with everything his whole life because he's so "special". /snark

I think he's just a bozo who would have done the same if he hadn't been an athlete ...

As they said about Denny McLain long ago: Million-dollar arm, ten-cent head.
