So once again they show they are more interested in the glory days than finding the best candidate.

Hmm interesting. I think this could be good and I was hoping the Gophers would take a look at him. Will be following LA Tech now!

If his name was Tyler Jones he would not been considered for a DOBO job. This is just plain bullshit.

Well, that's certainly an interesting choice. I must admit I did a little checking to make sure it wasn't some weird April Fools prank by the newspaper, but a lot of different places seem to have the story. (And the article did look a little hinky - no byline, that odd Barmore comment.)

Exactly. It's gonna take a long time to get La Tech back to some semblance of a decent program, Weatherspoon certainly didn't do it, so why not?

One of the great programs in WCBB history. I hope he turns it around there.

not an easy place to recruit. yeah, he got the job because of his name, though I assume he's been good as an assistant the last couple of years. The guy has to have a ton of knowledge and essentially grew up with it. He seems like he has a good head on his shoulders. I wish him well. It will be interesting to see if he can recruit/coach. It's a roll of the dice but IMO they could have done worse.

With Weatherspoon, they went with the flashy name rather than the time and experience as a coach. Now, they turned around and did it again.

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, you are done with any good will I have left for your program.

I suggest if all you know about him is his name and age, you either do some research or calm down and give him a chance. He's probably prepared himself as much as anyone can for a future in coaching, and though I wish he'd spent a little more time as an assistant, I do wish him the best of luck in this endeavor.

I thought it was a bad idea when his name was bandied about for Coastal a year or two back. I still think it would be a bad idea now, so I'm hoping the timing of this isn't coincidental. I don't think he's ready yet.

He's older and more experienced than his mother was when she became HC at Tennessee.

Sometimes getting your chance too soon can be a problem -- I know of two officials who got promoted too fast (one in baseball, one in basketball), weren't really ready, and then faded out of the picture. Of course they thought they were ready, but they both say that actually getting the opportunity several years later would have been better.

I hope that's not true for Tyler, as it would be great if he became a quality women's coach. We certainly could use more ...

This is kind of ironic. La Tech and Tennessee had some great games. Now Tyler gets his shot too turn around a legendary program.

It's become something of a tradition in football. The last four hires have been the sons of college coaches--Bicknell, Dooley, Dykes, Holtz. Of course, mostly it's been a flop, so don't know why to move it to another sport.

I'd have liked to have seen someone with HC experience, but the school isn't going to pay that well so it's not going to get great candidates.

Willing to give him a chance, though. At least he's coming in knowing something about coaching. And he should be able to relate to the players.

My gosh, talk about so soon... is he younger than Pat was when she started at Tennessee?

He's older than his mom was when she started at UT. Pat was 22. Tyler either is 24 or soon will be.

I thought it was pretty interesting listening to Kara Lawson talk about him at halftime of the Louisville-MD game. She's known him since he was 8 or 9 (still close to the family) and knows what he's about and how his mind works. She feels he is as prepared as anybody could be and is capable of doing the job. I guess we'll see!

Tyler is 23 years old. I love the irony within the collegiate women's basketball world - UT & LT had many great games since 1978. I'm not a fan of Lady Techsters or Tennessee but the games between them are great.

I guess Pat is going to visit Ruston more often from now on and spend the weekends with Leon Barmore and watching her son coach the team.

I felt that Big 12 schools should extend an invitation to Louisiana Tech in all sports. I mean, if Texas Tech is in Big 12, why not Louisiana Tech? Sure the first 5 years in Big 12, Louisiana Tech will have to adjust itself in order to elevate but anything is possible. And Louisiana Tech can return to the glory days if they get in Big 12 one day.

And a lot less experienced as an assistant than Jimmy Dykes, whose hire you panned in another thread.
