short term contract.

How short are we talking about? I know she's also going back to play in Korea.

Great pickup for the Caps. Just a short time ago, I read that Graf was going to bring back Shellie Sandie and Lucille Bailie. Shocked

Shelley Sandie was at the Flames/Caps game. She looks in great shape. Not sure about the shape of her basketball game though.

this is interesting to me because i was studying the w's list of players overseas and wanted to (confess my ignorance of such matters and) ask why the aussie league so rarely has non-aussie players. who has the answer(s)?

Wow, what fun for the Aussies.
A backcourt of Alana and Tully? Oh I'd pay to see that!

We don't have the money to attract big time imports.

I assume it's money. I would think the warm summer weather and English speaking natives (give or take the weird slang like Mappa Tassie) would make it an attractive option otherwise.

are you serious? i mean, i was thinking it was because there were plenty of talented aussies to field teams, and your league was more exclusive in that regard. 'cause when you look at the overseas list, a hierarchy emerges. you mean korea can afford talent but australia can't?

Yep, that's right.
WBB has virtually zero profile down here. The girls play in tiny, crappy stadiums in front of crowds measured by the hundreds, and teams get by on shoestring budgets.
For most teams, paying a quality overseas player any kind of attractive salary just isn't an option.

I'm serious.

In Europe and Korea, the big teams are bankrolled by generous sponsors (you'll find the Korean league is almost entirely funded by the big corporations there) who think it is prestigious and maybe a part of their philanthropic duty to fund sports teams and develop the talent. Here, money is funneled into other sports and basketball is treated like crap. For all our success in women's basketball, Australia generally still treats it like an unwanted third cousin (except when it comes around to the Olympics Rolling Eyes )

Well, considering it would start with about $1200 in airfare, you would be paying a lot for that privilege, caune. Wink

Absolutely right! Infuriating as it is, that situation just makes some of us even more fiercely determined to make a stand supporting our BBall players. The thing is that doesn't much replace the dollars they aren't getting but deserve to be getting. Sad

Sounds like Korea has and early AAU-esque situation - back in the day when Maytag, Aetna, Pepsi and misc. radio manufacturers sponsored teams.

If snarky Sydney residents expect a Snell jersey, snarky Sydney residents better have game photos when Sydney plays Canberra.
