I don't understand why coaches are recycled in college. They are bad, cant win nor recruit and they get fired. Then they turn up on someones list as a great candidate? Craziest thing I ever saw, not taking away anything from the newer assistants but this stuff gets me riled up. Why not go out and hire a really good high school coach with a hunger to prove the world wrong?

Just because someone was a player or a certain sex etc, does not mean they can coach. There is a ACC school right now that's getting ready to make a huge mistake in a hire.....in four to five years they will be exactly where they are right now. Rolling Eyes

Because experience matters. Very few people are at their best at a job in the first three or four years they do it. I would bet that Geno Auriemma, Tara VanDerveer and all the other elite coaches would say they get better every year -- so when you hire an experienced coach, you're hiring someone who's presumably learned from her mistakes and is better than she was before.

There aren't that many good high school coaches, those that are good, do they want to go into the college ranks and all of a sudden have all that pressure where it is pure business.

Problem is there are those that listen to circles of friends just like everything else involved in the basketball world, so it's nothing new that it happens in womens coaching.

Sometimes they do better the second or even third time around. Gary Blair wasn't winning national championships at Arkansas, for example.

In any event, schools are limited by the availability of qualified coaches. Taking an unknown quantity like an assistant or a HS coach is a bigger gamble than going with an established head coach.

in a move that surprises nobody, DeWolfe out at St. Peters according to hoopscoop. Contract is up, DeWolfe missed many games on maternity leave this year, and oh yeah the Peahens won only 2 games for the 2nd year in a row.

Most high school coaches are hired for recruiting purposes not to actually coach. It's usually an AAU coach getting the shot more so than the college coach. They will always come in as an assistant then can work their way up the ladder if successful. Former players can get in as team managers or debo's and work up if the program is successful. Usually a head coach would need prior head coaching experience unless it's on an interm bases.

Pitt is a great job.

During their recent run to the Sweet 16 in back to back years (08-09) with Zellous and others, Agnes sold quite a few tickets and not just when UConn came to town. Then they lost their Associated Head Coach (guy, can't remember his name), Ralph got her dream job at UConn, players transferred, and Agnes' weakness as a coach were exposed and the program quickly declined.

I can't imagine they don't call/beg Susie McConell to take the job, but as a Penn State alum, not sure she'd do it. Would be cool, though.
