I saw UWGB was up 34-27 over halftime against Virginia and then was surprised to see they were only 8-24 from the field. But I see they are doing their damage at the line - 17 of 18 for ft's compared to 4-5 for Virginia.

I'm rooting for UWGB which should help Virginia since I seem to put a jinx on most teams I root for Smile.

UWGB has to be FAR smarter and tougher with the ball.

If you cant lead with your head in football, you shouldn't be able to do it in basketball either.

Am I the only one who wonders why Virginia didn't start trapping UWGB sooner?

And why isn't Virginia making sure Wright touches the ball down the stretch here? Instead, it's ending up with lesser players?

Virgina had so many chances to tie this one up or take the lead.

Did they forget they had a young woman by the name of Monica Wright on their team?

Plus missed a ton of free throws in the last few minutes.

Is this Virginia's worst NCAA tourney disappointment since Tennessee came back to beat them in Charlottesville in the '96 Elite Eight?

I don't know why Virginia didn't give the ball to Monica Wright. I don't know why no one could hit a free throw. I don't know what the hell was up with the last fouls on Hoewisch and Teischlag. I don't know where the hell June Courteau found two tenths of a second. I think this is what we call a clusterfuck.

Down by 15, Virginia holds GB to 0 field goals in the last 12 minutes of the game - And still couldn't pull of a comeback. SMH

Only consolation is that the officiating clusterfuck didn't cost UWGB the game (though their simply horrific ball handling and inability to avoid fouling down the stretch nearly did).

That ranks (IMO) as one of the more...err...*exciting* games of the tourney so far. Definitely a white knuckler. Also one of the more bizarre games, too. It seemed like the officiating was trying to give every advantage to UVA, who didn't know what to DO with it....the missed put-backs and free throws were killers. Heartbreaker for Wright & Co., but lotsa guts from Green Bay. BTW, BRILLIANT performances by Hoewisch and Tetschlag..(where DO they get these names in Wisconsin?? I guess they're still easier than Tchatchouang, Schuttloffel, Pilypaitis and Ogwumike! Cool ?)

Smile - that's one of the cool things about UWGB too - out of 14 players on their roster 10 are from Wisconsin and the other ones are from the Midwest - Minnesota and Illinois.

Watching the Oklahoma- SDSU game tonight reminded me that the SDSU originally took the UWGB job when Kevin Borseth took the Michigan job but he changed his mind shortly after taking the job and went back to SDSU.

Both coaches (SDSU & UWGB) deserve a helluva lot of credit for taking LOCAL talent and producing solid teams. I'm guessing these schools don't currently stand a chance with the Ogwumikes and Moores and Diggins types in the recruiting wars, but hopefully, their success will continue to grow.

Monica has really carried the team all year. It does not bode well for next year.

I suspect Green Bay will see lots of press and traps in the next round. THey better spend all day tomorrow figuring out how the heck to get the ball in play against it. That part got real ugly.

I know the 12 vs. 5 matchups are always an adventure but this has to be something of an embarrassment for Virginia.

And wow, next year is going to be a rough year for UVA when they don't have Monica Wright.

What a miserable ending to Monica Wright's college career. GB couldn't buy a bucket, and the game was totally winnable for VA, but they repeatedly threw the ball away and missed critical free throws (Monica missed one herself down the stretch. At least Monica has a WNBA career to look forward to.

Overall, not a good night for the ACC, with Georgia Tech getting upset as well and NC State being blown out by UCLA.

Josh, Iowa State doesn't really have the horses to press UWGB! It will be a game of cutting, ball movement and 3 point shooting.

First of all, my handle is not "myrtle." Laughing

Second of all, you may be right about Iowa State; in which case Green Bay may have a chance to win again. The best way to beat a rhythm, finesse, execution-based offense is to get in their grill and disrupt it. Why Virginia waited until they fell behind by 15 points to do so is beyond me.

It's the same reason Virginia hasn't been past the second round in a decade or past the S16 since the Dawn Staley days.
