You probably heard me cussin' as soon as they revealed that pod. Congrats, St. John's! You put together the best season in program history! Now you get to play the toughest #11 seed in the field! And then if you pull that game out of your ass (which we might not- we do NOT match up well to Princeton), you get to play Florida State in Tallahassee! |
I was very impressed by St. Johns when I saw them play in the Big East tournament. They are a very young team, too, right? They are a team I will be watching.

Princeton is also very young, mostly freshmen and sophomores. Watch out for these teams the next couple years!
This is one of several first round games I really want to see.

Two seniors (our starting "center", who busts ass every night, God love her, but if she's 6-0 I'm Sue Bird, and our three-point specialist), two juniors, one sophomore (and one who maaaay, conceivably, possibly, someday get into uniform for more than three minutes), and five frosh.

I think Arky-LR has a good shot at beating Georgia Tech. That's about as good a matchup as they could have asked for. |
UALR had a decent season, and I'm not sure they really weren't a *better* team than Middle Tennessee (who beat them for the conference title by a bucket). They're an 11 seed, MTST is a 10...in The Beast Bracket (w/UConn). UALR probably has more favorable odds to go further than their intra-conference arch rival, after all is said and done.

I don't think either has much chance of lasting past round two, and I like Middle Tennessee's chances of beating Mississippi State better than Arky-LR's chances of beating Ga Tech.

I dunno...I see either game as unpredictable. But round 2? Can't see either game's victor getting past OSU or OU, either. butttt..Cinderella DOES make an appearance here 'n there.

Jerry Palm thought Southern Cal and Old Dominion would get in. Charlie Creme thought Southern Cal and Michigan. Instead, mid-majors Ark.--Little Rock and Wis.--Green Bay were selected.
Maybe we shouldn't be too surprised, since the selection committee has 8 members from mid-major schools or conference hierarchies and only 2 members from majors (Chair Jane Meyer, Iowa and Jacki Silar, Duke).
Next year could be even more "interesting," as this is Meyer and Silar's last year. All the experienced members this time next year will be from Mid-major Land.

The committee has always been heavy with non-major representatives. This year is very unusual in the number of mid-majors getting at-large bids.

| The mid-major at-large teams--especially the questionable ones like UALR and UWGB--had better win this weekend. Next year's committee will remember the results. Losing by 15 points to five seeds won't help future prospective mid-major at-large teams.

| I for one think Stanford could have real big problems with Rutgers in the second round. Rutgers finally seemed to wake up in the big east tourny. Rutgers really hung with Stanford the first game of the season, and they can look back to that game and see what they need to do right this time around IF they get outta the first round.

I don't know... I think UCLA, ASU, Cal and Washington are all Rutgers-wannabes so the Cardinal get a lot of practice playing against that sort of defense. And they always beat it.

I have watched UCLA, Cal, & Washington all play this season, and to me they don't play a thing like Rutgers or do anything Rutgers does to effect the game.

If the committee remembers this year's results it will be the first time ever. They more or less make a point of not paying any attention to what's happened in previous years. Sometimes that's good; more often it's hideously awful.
