WBCA Releases Finalists for the 2008 State Farm Wade Trophy

ATLANTA - The State Farm Wade Trophy Committee along with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) announced today the 12 finalists in contention for The State Farm Wade Trophy.

“The State Farm Wade Trophy committee has compiled quite an impressive list of 12 finalists,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “These young women not only succeed on the hardwood, but also serve as positive role models in the community. Each one of the finalists is deserving of the State Farm Wade Trophy.” ...

Prince is more deserving than either Ajavon or Carson, but I guess they went with the seniors. Having said that, where is Charel Allen? Confused

You and I are more deserving than Ajavon or Carson.

In addition to Charel Allen, what about Andrea Riley? Ashley Walker?

Very Happy I do have a much better jump shot.

It's strictly a "name" and "fame" issue here, and it's sad, really. You cannot tell me that Allen is less deserving than these two. You just can't.

Given her recent play, Riley should've made the list over Toliver (who has REEKED since mid-February) and Walker should've made it over Tina Charles.

I think you can make an argument about Ajavon v. Prince, and I'd probably agree with you if you picked Prince, but you shouldn't do the same with Carson. Carson is by far the best defensive player on a defense-oriented team, she's often asked to serve as the point when Ajavon is out of the game, and she scores double-digit points on average. Of course, if you discount defense entirely, she doesn't look so good, but when you consider how the players she guards do compared to their usual games, her defense may be worth 10 ppg on its own.

Are freshmen not eligible? The BIGGEST name missing is Maya Moore. And she is certainly one of the three best players in the country right now.

You could make a similar argument for Alexis Hornbuckle or even LaToya Pringle, neither of which I'd back as NPOY candidates. That's not to say that I don't like Carson (I do, very much) or don't realize how important she is to her team. I just don't think she's one of the top players in the country when you take into account her offense.

FWIW, I don't discount defense. That's why I don't think someone like Toliver should be on the list ahead of Riley (even though Riley's nowhere near the best at defending her position--she does at least try). That's why I argued for Allen's inclusion over a more talented offensive player like Shavonte Zellous.

Correct, which makes this list lose a lot of luster.

I'm not going to argue with you about whether any of the RU players belong on the list (not saying I agree with you, just that it's not my point). All I'm saying is that I wouldn't put Prince ahead of Carson. In my view, Carson is a better all-around player right now.

Here's hoping for Candace Parker.
