Wait. So have they found her replacement?

Arizona really needed a change, as does Oregon but it was already reported that Bev Smith will be back for at least next year. Good luck to Joan who was a great representative of the Pac-10.

I can't say I'm surprised. Hopefully though, this means that the Pac-10 will start moving away from mediocrity. Joan had some good years but really could not move into the elite level and the program never seemed to recover after the death of Shawntinice Polk.

As for Bev Smith, she seems to underrecruit the level of players. Oregon has great resources provided by Nike but yet they continue to underperform as well. Rightly mentioned as this will be the program on the hot seat next year right along with Trakh.

I can't say I'm surprised either, but it makes me sad thinking about Pokey all over again plus I have admired & liked Joan since she was at Long Beach State beating the snot out of UCSB.

Hope she finds whatever she wants.

I predicted that Joan would be seeking new employment. Her teams have really tanked sinced Polk died. I am no Joan fan, so I won't miss her. But I do wish her all the best....

Way overdue. It seems like we're cleaning up the Pac-10 right now, which is also long overdue. I wish they would do something at Oregon.

Some thoughts on Joan's replacement at AU.

Among the names mentioned are Maryland head coach and former UA player Brenda Frese, former Arizona player Julie Brase-Hairgrove and former UA men's assistant coach Jim Rosborough.

Brenda Frese? I can't see her leaving Maryland. Would she?

I don't think so but she is an alum. I don't know if they can pay her enough though. But it may be nice for her to get away from UNC.

Especially after the senior class graduates, that's all five of the starters, if I'm not mistaken? She'd have to start over but I think she can recruit well and make Arizona a contender again.

I still don't think she'd do that, though.

She didn't hesitate to leave Minnesota.

But ... Maryland is in a good spot right now. Good team, good conference, good recruiting. I can't imagine that Arizona is in as good of a spot.

Going from Minnesota to Maryland is a step up. Going from Maryland to Arizona is a step down. Maryland is as good as any job in the country. It wasn't perceived as such prior to Coach Frese's arrival, but it is easy to see now.

She might believe she can do the same magic at her alma mater.

Nor Ball State but hey at least she stuck around for 2 year before going fishing again..

Out of the 4 teams she has been on how many of those teams has she said this to.

Since Billie Moore is assisting in the coaching search, was her appearance last night in Oklahoma a sign? According to Lieberman (who else), Moore was sitting next to Pat's mom and son. Was she interviewing Nikki Caldwell? Did she just fly in from Spokane or has Brenda been eliminated from the mix?

things that may look like the 'perfect' job from the outside may not turn out to be all you thought after getting there and seeing the real nitty-gritty of the job in the light of day and not all the pie in the sky promises about what they're going to do for the women's program. and even if it was the perfect job at one time, priorities change as we develop new goals.

quoting david byrne...'things fall apart, its scientific.' Smile

having said that, i don't think brenda will leave maryland for arizona; she seems in a happy place right now, both personally and professionally. besides, what a chore it'd be to have to move 'the twins'. Wink

I'm not sure what kind of drugs people are using that would make them think someone would consider leaving Maryland, one of the top 5 jobs in the country, for a struggling Arizona program in a town with very little to offer.

Pat's girlfriend won't raid Pat's staff for a hire. Think Dawn Staley or someone like that.
