I think beyond half the league the term power rankings no longer works. This is a very liquid situation.

1. Detroit
2. Seattle
3. Houston
4. Sacramento
5. Indiana
6. Los Angeles
7. Connecticut

The solid 'teams' there are Houston, Sacramento, Connecticut. The super-talented teams are Detroit, Seattle (Bird, Lennox, and LJ could beat some teams 3 on 5) Los Angeles. Indiana is in the middle. The super-talented teams are actually, at this point, more of a question mark. How good can they get? What is the potential for everything to fall apart?

Detroit's not going to fall apart. Seattle is more likely to, but probably won't. LA, on the other hand, is coming apart like bad ravioli.

Sacramento looks to have solved some perennial boogerbears. They're just going to be tough all season long in their typical workmanlike way. They're peaking already. Don't know what that really means but if Yo starts wearing down, they won't have the post strength that makes it all work.

Houston is a very very interesting team, as always. They have substance and potential. They're a work in progress. They're not anywhere near the team they can be or will need to be to win 25 games. But they seem to be solidly on that track, don't they?

I wish I could have seen this Mercury game because it looks like a laboratory experiment for the studious Comet fan. The league's number two scorer held to 4 points? The league's numer one scorer puts up just 10? Snow held to half her average. Somebody was really puttin' the squeeze on somebody in that game.

Swoopes seems to be reliving '97 wearing Cooper's sneakers. Every single Comets win, Swoopes, or I should say the new and improved Swoopes, has been the difference. She has pretty much single handedly put down the opposing team's rally in every game.

It's like We have Sheryl and You Don't. That's the difference.

Very similar to '97 when the difference between the Comets and everyone else was Cooper.

Different league and Swoopes won't score her way past the Storm or Detroit... but she's certainly exploiting the pressure other teams are putting on her. I've seen that myself in the two games I've watched.

Indiana has a lot of talent and they've hung in there to the bitter end in their two losses. Last night many teams would have faded but that team REALLY doesn't go down easy.

I don't know JACK about Connecticut.

Well, I've always been a Massey fan, I've never really followed his pro rankings, but here's a link to them:

Only one road win, only one win by double digits, only one win against a team with a winning record. I need to see more before I annoint them as #1.

you gotta stop being a slave to the numbers, pilight. i see the power rankings as something that takes into account the tide and how it might turn, as it were, in addition to the numbers. one of the many things that give detroit the "power" ranking of no. 1 is that its best player is still sitting on the bench. another is that detroit's bench is the strongest in the league . . .

OK. I based my power rankings on what they actually have done rather than on what I think they might do. I already did preseason predictions based on the latter.

Sacramento - Solid, deep, focused. Nicole is Nicole again!
Seattle - Offense from everywhere.
Detroit - Doing this well WITHOUT Swin?!
Houston - Swoopes in MVP form, Snow showing up.
Indiana - So far, so good.
Connecticut - Just as good as last season, but not really any better.
Los Angeles - Mique is Mique, but Dr Evil simply CAN'T coach Women's Basketball.
Washington - DMJ, Mighty Mouse, Alana's back, it's coming together in DC!
New York - Can never count the Lib's out. It all depends on which Becky shows up.
Minnesota - Only wins were against teams without coaches
Phoenix - Granted, Kamila hasn't played yet, but neither has the #3 pick...
Charlotte - If the next game results in a loss, I say Trudi's gone.
San Antonio - I know this team is rebuilding, but Dang!
Chicago - I wouldn't be surprised if they go all season without a win!

I expect Phoenix and Washington to move up in the next couple weeks.

You're all ranking Seattle too high. There's no team that can match their depth in the post, but their ranks at guard are very thin. Sue Bird cannot keep playing 36 minutes a game all season long, and if either she or Lennox sustain any kind of injury, things don't look good for the Storm.

Maybe we need to define 'Power Rankings' then, because I too would have Seattle up high.
To me it doesn't mean who is the deepest, or who might do what in the future, or who has injuries - it is about who is hot right now, and the best way of measuring right now is by the recent results (since the future can't be measured).
Because the season is so young, the rankings are going to be similar to the standings.

Mine are:

1. Seattle - 4 game winning streak including wins over Indiana & Houston
2. Detroit - Undefeated, but with a slightly easier schedule so far
3. Sacramento - Looking strong at the moment but dropped one to the Fever
4. Houston - Swoopes has found it again
5. Connecticut - Back on track after 3 consecutive wins
6. Indiana - Looking like a playoff team in the east
7. New York - Won 2/3 and pushed the Shock to OT
8. Los Angeles - Lost to Charlotte & Minnesota. Beat SASS, but so does everyone.
9. Minnesota - Struggling to stay in touch with .500 so far
10. Washington - No shame in being 10th with the players they've missed
11. Charlotte - Saved from disgrace by a surprising win over LA
12. San Antonio - Beat Charlotte. So what.
13. Phoenix - 3-game losing streak is the league's worst.

I should've been more clear. I wanted you all to define your power rankings based on who you think the favorites are to win the 2005 championship based on what you have seen up to this point.

Now that's a horse of a different color!

I'd change my ranking completely if it's about where the teams will finish.

I am a strong believer in you are the champion until someone beats you for it. So, Seattle is my favorite. I don't want to go on paper, which is why LA isn't in my top three. I think Bibby will shred the paper.

I agree. I give coaches little credit for the performances of their superstars (e.g. Leslie and Holdsclaw). It's the coach's job to ensure that the role players excel in a system that surrounds the superstars.

I don't like the way he is utilizing the abilities of Dixon, Teasley, and Thomas. He deserves more time though, so we'll just see when Mabika returns.
