Really? It's great to see Cal ranked high! Very Happy That being said, could you explain a bit as to your thinking regarding the top three? I want to be clear this isn't a criticism or anything, just I think you have more knowledge than I and I'd love to hear it.

Well, PurdueBball's original post did say "from most to least favorite"--maybe fancy_daniel's favorite happens to be Cal...

OHHHHHHHHHH.

Oops. For some reason, I totally read this as like most favorite to win or something... Which now that I think about it really doesn't make sense, because duh, he just would have written best to worst... And oh god, I think my brain shriveled and dribbled out of my ear after my stats final.

Wait wait, then I want to change mine:

1. Cal
2. ASU
3. Washington
4. USC
5. UCLA
6. Oregon State
7. Oregon
8. Arizona
9. Washington St.
10. Stanford

A month or so ago the Cougs would have been higher on my list but as they're now coached by one of my least favorite people on earth they've fallen like a stone.
Just for kicks here's my coach list

1. Tia Jackson (Ms. Buzz)
2. Lavonda Wagner (Classy and good)
3. Tara VanDerVeer (I hate Stanford, but you gotta respect Tara)
4. Mark Trakh (a Teacher of the game)
5. Joan Bonvincini (has had rough go lately but a good coach)
6. Bev Smith (just don't care)
7. Kathy Olivier (recruits and then does nothing)
8. Joanne Boyle (because Cal's playing a bit too physical)
9. Charli Turner Thorne (entertaining brand of basketball, just too much bad blood from the incidents with the Mendiolas)
10. June Daugherty (not enough space to list the things I can't stand about June & Mike)

Hey Dawg,

I respect your list, but just a question---"Cal playing too physical." Does that mean you think they play dirty?? From the looks of it, I think the Pac-10 teams need to be more physical (not dirty) if they are going to compete well outside the league.....I think that's one of the things that caused Stanford to lose early, was that they aren't very physical....

Just my two cents....btw, I grew up in Washington so have a soft spot for the Huskies and am looking forward to seeing what Jackson will do with the team.

Not all the time, and not as much this past year, but the game at UW in 05-06 is as physical a game as I've ever seen and Cal was instigating most of it.
At one point, Hampton flat out fell on Breanne Watson when she could have stayed on her feet and fell into Bre's ribs with her knees up, she got up and was laughing about it heading back to the bench. No call, fyi, thanks again Pac-10 refs. It's more a beef with the officials call of that game, but Cal was taking full advantage and playing a bit out of control.

This year's game was pretty clean as I recall.

On a related note, it's almost criminal how may times Emily not only gets fouled but clobbered without a call.

While we're on the subject of dirty play, the biggest culprit in the conference is Kirsten Thompson.

I think Hampton has grown a lot as a person and as a player this past year....she was a pretty tough kid her freshman year....Boyle suspended her for the Stanford game due to her having gotten in some sort of altercation at her old high school during a girl's game....Anyway, I give Boyle a lot of credit with Dev...She drew a line in the sand and Dev has responded and matured as both a player and a person. Actually that's one reason I admire Boyle a great deal. I believe she truly cares about her players and their lives....one reason she stayed at Cal and turned down Duke....I don't know how much you know about Boyle's near-death experience, but she's a very grounded, thoughtful person---not one to encourage dirty play imho.

Here's a link to a good story from the LA times about her comeback from brain surgery:

Yes, I love me some Cal love too. Oregon State is moving up for me too. If they keep getting better, they move up on my list.

I didn't really have a problem with Hampton this year. Jayne Appel's elbows clocking everyone in sight down low is another story but as a Cal fan I'm sure you got to see that up close and personal. For the record, I wasn't insinuating that Boyle was encouraging the dirty play, it was more a matter that the officials (& Boyle) didn't seem to be doing anything to stop it.

I like the way Cal plays the game, I just wish we could mark it down as an easy win like we used to. C'est la vie. At least there will always be the Cougars to put down for 2 guaranteed wins because there ain't no way the Daugherty's will change their system or turn them into a winning program.

Prestigious academic institutions at the very top (Duke, UVA, Cryowina, Wake) and the crappy ones at the very bottom (Moo U, Klempsun, Vick Polytechnical Institute, Bowden U). I also put the other Big East rejects (Miami, BC) in that bottom group and place Turtletown in there because the student body sucks and because they stole away one of my favorite professors. Georgia Tech is like the red-headed stepchild of this bunch. I only pay real attention to the school when the "state" mandates (i.e. when the football team is winning or some other intriguing reason).
