my sun mini plan ticket package included an individual game order form with the theme nights listed. the thursday, july 28, game against the liberty is listed as "faith and family night". wtf?!? can't they just make it "family night" and leave it at that?

Why shouldn't they do that? I don't get it.
Although there is something kind of funny about faith and family night at the casino.

hey... i'm a liberty fan and i don't hate the sun. remember, i just bought a mini plan.
i just wonder what the hell "faith night" entails. are there prayers to your diety of choice during time outs? will the sun cheerleaders weart habits instead of spandex?
the more i think about this the funner it gets. should have known it would only be a matter of time before the political trendiness of "faith" morphed into a commercialized phenomenon. i wonder who will sponsor the giveaway...

Let's see...Pope Benedict XVI pins, carpets with the Sun logo, Bible/Koran cases, little Buddha statues...oh the possibilites!
Because faith isn't tied to just one religion now, is it?
Whenever I am at the Reservation I always have faith in the slot machines!

All kidding aside how hard is it to go to see a game there if you live in manhattan and don't have a car? Can you go by bus?

lib fan, i've wondered, too, and my very quick study of the options last season pointed to bus schedules that make it a day trip - you leave early in the day and come back late in the day or early evening. designed, i think, to make you spend an eternity in the casino. if you think you can take a day off, go early and behave yourself around all that temptation until the game starts, you're probably good to go with a handful of bus companies. you should also check to make sure the last bus pulling out doesn't pull out before the game's over. for my money, i'd rent a zipcar.

"Why shouldn't they do that? I don't get it."
Because:
1. These sorts of events are generally not ecumenical but rather fueled by evangelical Protestants who really don't have a great deal of respect for other folks' faith let alone lots of fans' families.
2. Thanks in large measure to the religious right in this country, religion has become an incredibly divisive matter and shouldn't be mixed into a fun evening at a WNBA game.
3. All fans should feel welcome at a WNBA game; stuff like this makes some fans feel excluded in the worst way.
I can't believe they are doing it at a Sun game. They do this sort of stuff in Charlotte all the time, which unlike Conn. is in true Bible belt country.

The Lynx have something like it, although I dunno if "faith and family" is the name they use: it's a night for bulk sales to church groups (and Christian-themed day camps). As long as they don't invite homophobes to speechify on-court I have no problem with it at all. And yes, there are church groups and Christian day camps in Connecticut.
If designated GLBT nights impede, rather than encourage, ticket sales, then don't have 'em. Instead, be sure your team supports Pride Day; sponsor something for the Pride Parade. Again, that's something the Lynx did last year, and it seems to have worked: the Pride Day game was well-attended (for an early-season Lynx game-- poorly attended if your standard's a Mystics crowd, but so were all the early-season Lynx games).

As one of the board's token Jews, I don't get the need for it either. Family would suffice I agree. I will reserve judgment until then. |
G-d willing they decide to have Mishpacha night. But I don't want them to feel guilty. I'll just sit here alone in the dark.

The Sun won't; all the Bubbies are either chain smoking by the slots, pouring the free drinks into empty two liter bottles, or waiting in line for the buffet
