I agree with CTH.

Imus' comments were inappropriate and offensive. But he has been making these comments for years. Where has the outrage been? If you don't like his program, change the radio station.

There was no adverse action taken because of the perceived "discrimination." What harm was truly suffered? The players were referred to in derogatory terms. There is no Constitutional right not to be insulted.

True statement-that's why Imus isn't in jail. There also isn't any Constitutional right not to be fired because you've insulted someone.

But in the end, Imus's firing wasn't because of his derogatory comments. It was because companies were pulling their advertisements and employees were threatening to quit. Which, imo, makes Imus's firing completely appropriate.

It's all about the money. Duh.

There is no Constitutional right to keep your job after airing a 'Klan in the Morning' laugh riot, either.

What harm was truly suffered? You have a bunch of white boys getting together to discuss important stuff but as a warmup refer to blacks in terms like 'jigaboos' and 'spear throwers', and you ask what harm was truly suffered?

You are degrading a people based on their race. That's harm suffered.

When it starts to sound like hate speech, people get turned off.

And if they get turned off, the ratings will drop...and then he will be off the air.

Using the "hate speech" argument, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton engaged in "hate speech" regarding the Duke lacrosse team. Still waiting for them to lose their livelihood as a result.

Point is, people had the choice to listen to Imus. Many did. Many did not. If they didn't like what he said, they weren't forced to listen.

Well, the FCC took no action against Imus. His right to hate speech was protected. But his advertisers, as is their right, decided to turn him off.

And they did it, thanks to people like Sharpton and Jackson. Still waiting for Sharpton's mea culpa on Tawanna Brawley, Duke lacrosse, etc.

The advertisers were fine with Imus before.

No, they turned him off thanks to people like Black Enterprise, League of Black Women, NOW, labor activists, unions, CBS executives, and thousands of ordinary people who called in or emailed complaints.

You are giving Sharpton and Jackson way too much power.

In terms of advertisers, they heard complaints about Imus before. Imus aired racially objectionally content on his show every week, sometimes multiple times a week.

Imus promised his advertisers he'd turn the racist aspect of the show down and didn't deliver as promised.

Where did he promise that? His show has been on for many years.

The advertisers didn't feel the need to pull the plug before.

Everyone jumped on the bandwagon to yell, "Gotcha."

I'm ambivalent about him losing his radio gig. I thought he needed to be removed from the TV news network, MSNBC, since he was clearly not doing a news show and the type of network he was on gave his opinion added weight that was unwarranted. That the Scarlet Knights are "nappy headed hos" isn't news and has no place on a news network.

He promised that after Mike Wallace and 60 minutes exposed him as a rascist a few years back.

He promised it again after advertisers and the station was deluged with complaints when he attacked Maya Angelou.

I know there are many Imus threads to follow but I have posted many links.

I'm sure he'll get his radio gig back. If anything, this will increase his popularity.

I'll be curious to see if he continues the racist banter. I don't think he will. Call me an optimist, but I tend to think that after the meeting with RU, he 'gets it'.

I find it rather odd that MSNBC thought it appropriate to fire Imus and then play and post everywhere all of the time the pornography that is the propaganda of the Virginia Tech killer. What does NBC want? To encourage copy cats? To glorify this murderer? They fire Imus for words and then can't wait to rush the killer's video, photos, and audio all over their network. A bit of moral confusion I think. Rather obscene I think. I'd rather see and hear Imus in the Morning then see the murderer all day. But of course, I don't...I turned it off. Something Imus' critics didn't seem able to do

I think they're going to be in some deep shit over this one. I didn't think so until I saw the stuff. Bad move.

i don't know. i saw the entire clip. i didn't hear hate speech from imus that day. i have heard hate speech in clips of KKK rallies, or that minister firing up the congregation about killing whites, and many other times. pat robertson comes to mind.

i also don't accept that the use of jigaboo and wannabee was hateful either- it was used to reference lee's film re: blacks' own skin tone problems.

these were throw away lines in a minor, 20-second seemingly ad-libbed bit.

i do believe most amercans are passive racists.

i believe the "outcry" was much ado about little.

the best thing about all this was the Don Ho headline followed his death a few days later. can't make that shit up.

The media gives Jackson and Sharpton too much power.

May be the networks could honor the victims of the VT tragedy by sharing their lives with us instead of some lunatic who is getting is exactly what he wanted. Should have handed the stuff to the authorities and been done with it.

good thing NBC didn't get hold of the tape of Steve Irwin's death. they would have had to have had a meeting (at least) to mull that one over. you'd have seen some parts of that tape.

Hey, don't blame Mr Sharpton and Mr Jackson his firing- the blame lies sqaurely at Mr Imus' door, or should I say mouth.
