"We used to be able to walk around here as relative unknowns," said Berenato, who won six games her first season but notched 22 victories in 2006, her third season. "Well, I get a phone call from Shea Ralph the other day. She's one of our assistants, who played at UConn with all the craziness of the fans there. Shea's trying to work out at a fitness center here and she's getting all excited on the phone. She says she can't even finish her workout because all kinds of people are interrupting her to talk about Pitt basketball. That's never happened here before."

It's happening now.

"Family atmosphere" Rolling Eyes

That's my least favorite of all the WBB euphemisms.

They've still got a long way to go before they'll accomplish anything major at Pitt. Good to see that Duke put them in their places yesterday. The one quality opponent they've faced this season...and they got blown out.

The Agnus Berenato "let's schedule soft during nonconference" deal will only take you so far. She did that at Georgia Tech and set that team back for years.

I just took a look at Pitt and the other teams in the Big East that seem to be doing surprisingly well for a post on the RU board. Except for Marquette, they all have pretty soft schedules, so it's hard to convince yourself that they're any good. Pitt, for instance, has no wins over RPI top 50 teams. The best win came over Penn State, which is RPI #52 right now.

It could be that the soft schedules don't mean anything and that these teams are good. Pitt will find out on January 6 at the RAC.

They could be a program on the rise, with Jamie Dixon on the men's side, nice facilties, and a nice women's staff.

They've got some talent too; are they over-ranked? Yes. They're not that good, and the Big East season will prove that out. Still, it's nice to see someone new get some looks.

Although I generally agree with your statement about Pitt and their soft schedule, Maryland played a soft NON CONFERENCE schedule last year and they won the National Championship. Sure it helped playing in the ACC with two other Final Four teams. But look at Maryland's non conference schedule, ACC (All Cup Cakes)

All cupcakes?

That schedule included playing the year before's runner-up and a Tennessee team that beat Maryland. The Terps' non-conference schedule was better last year than Pitt's is by far.

It certainly offers two more chances to lose than anyone on the Pitt schedule.

It also offers two more realistic chances to lose than Maryland's OOC schedule this year as well.
