The pupil (Dawn Staley) v. the teacher (Debbie Ryan)...part deux.

Temple's Kameisha Hairston started things off with 22 (yes, 22) points in the first half as Temple cruised to a halftime lead 39-33. Pupil was obviously taking it to the teacher.

The teacher, as crafty as she is, pulled out a new strategy. She employed a box-and-one defense on Hairston, forcing her into a 2-5 second half. So who was the scrappy shut-down defender? UVA senior shooter Brenna McGuire, a player who has recorded one block and two steals on the season. Apparently, she really got into Hairston's head a little because reports say that Hairston barked at McGuire the entire second half. Temple watched its lead evaporate in the second half. After Temple pulled ahead 62-61, Sharnee' Zoll, who idolizes Dawn Staley, delivers a pass to the corner to freshman Monica Wright for a timely three-pointer. After that, UVA puts the wraps on Temple. Hairston continued to be frustrated with McGuire's defense while her teammates (namely LaKeisha Eaddy and Fatima Maddox) kept missing shots.

No upset to report here. Virginia wins 71-65 on a very emotional night for both teams. Wright (pictured) scores a career-high 26 points, Lyndra Littles posts third consecutive double-double with 18 points and 13 boards, and Zoll finishes with 12 points and 8 assists. Hairston leads Temple with 30 (yes, 30) points, Shenita Landry pours in 14 points, and Fatima Maddox chips in with 11.

Dawn had this to say about a couple of Hoos:

Quote:
What about Sharneé Zoll?
She's the key. I think she's the general on the team. She recovers a good deal of what Virginia throws away. You need someone on your team that can run the team in tight situations. She may not light up the scoreboard, but with the things that she does, she really doesn't have to. She fires up the people and she makes them look good. And you want a point guard like that."

Quote:
What do you think about freshman Monica Wright?
"She's fearless. When you are a freshman, and you play relentless and fearless like that, sometimes it can blow up. Most of the time its something good that develops into something special. She's got it. She's got the skills. She plays hungry. The more basketball she plays at this level, the more talents of hers you will see come through like they did tonight."
