Marquette has two players in the portal this year as far as I know.

According to Raoul, there only 2 officially in the portal at this point.

Most unfortunate, but at least you know it's cuz the coach is leaving....MY TEAM has everyone leaving, with the coach staying. Shocked Razz

Sorry for you with that happening.

I’m not so sure that Hare and Karlen entering the portal are because of Duffy leaving. Both entered the portal before Duffy got hired by VT and I feel like Karlen had decided on it earlier as she chose to participate in senior day ceremonies at the end of February - that told me then she wasn’t taking her Covid year at MU and I was guessing then she might grad transfer. A 2024 signee and a 2025 verbal commit reopened their recruitment right after Duffy left and that is for sure because of Duffy leaving. I haven’t tried to figure out yet the status of their other two class of 2024 signees. I’ll worry about that after they hire a new coach - I’m sure it will come up then. Edited to add - just heard another signee for 2024 has reopened her recruitment - one remains for now.

My original comment about two in the portal was because of a post that said MU had at least five players in the transfer portal.

When Kieger left, she had signed 8 players who were to be incoming frosh. Only two of those recruits reopened their recruitment/left right away. There was one player from Australia who had already enrolled at MU but was due to play in the fall that transferred to LSU I believe and a local player Shemera Williams reopened her recruitment. Claire Kaifes, Nirel Lougbo and Jordan King stayed at MU their whole careers although Lougbo had to quit early for medical reasons. Three others started out at MU but later transferred including Camryn Taylor and Taylor Valladay who both went to Virginia. Valladay rejoined Kieger at Penn State this season as a grad transfer.

Nothing official or announced yet, but I have seen things swirling on twitter and other sites about Kim Stephen’s (Marshall HC) expected to take the Tennessee job. Her record is 217-31 and has a tournament appearance and conference championship in her first season at Marshall.

If this is true, certainly not the splash or any of the names any of us were thinking, but Danny White could know something we don’t. White is a good AD, based on past success and moves.

That's a surprise to me.

Does this help explain why they opted out of WBIT?

I wouldn't think so. If she wants to retire due to no more motivation I don't see a few more games being too taxing. But if it is, let the assistants coach practice and coach in the game and she can sit on the bench and watch her team enjoy themselves.

I think the best explanation in these cases where a team was a possibility for the NCAA tournament but didn't make it and turns down the WNIT (and now WBIT) is usually - "miffed".

I think a lot of the buzz generated from a parody account, and someone legitimate who claimed she had interviewed in Knoxville even though Danny White was holding interviews this past week in Atlanta. That said, I do think she's a serious candidate. Danny wants a winner with a championship pedigree, and she won the D2 national championship in 2022, turned Marshall around into a conference champion in just one season, and was the D1 rookie coach of the year (and was the Pat Summitt D2 coach of the year, which is a nice connection). I think he's also after better offense and Xs and Os; Marshall was 2nd in pace and 5th in points this season (and 3rd in steals and 7th in offensive rebounds, which feels like classic Tennessee).

But at this point, my best guess is that it could be Brenda Frese, who could be ready for a change, and is a D1 national champion (even if it was 18 years ago), 7-time conference champion, and two-time national coach of the year. JMO from trying to piece things together in the Lady Vols forum.

Shawn Poppie Named Clemson Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Second major conference vacancy filled. Second man replacing a woman.

Hope it's just two one-offs and not a trend developing.

I was concerned about the possibility of more women coaches being pushed aside especially as the women's game gains popularity, corporate support, etc. There are already more male coaches of D-1 NCAA WBB teams than there are female coaches (it's about 58-42%) but methinks the gap will grow and more women coaches will lose out on opportunities. We shall see.

I think it's really important to straighten out some of the narratives that are being pushed without anyone doing actual research.

2 years ago, the ACTUAL percentage of coaches female-to-male in NCAA Division I Basketball was as follows:

60-40 Head Coaches (Female to Male)

As for assistant coaches it was about the same percentage-wise. For support staff it was closer to 50-50.

I know because I did the research. All 353 websites I visited. I only mention it because people tend to overreact when a man gets hired to be a head coach. The gap is simply not as drastic as it has been made out to be. I can't speak for non-DI levels because I didn't research them. But the idea that there are more Male coaches than Female coaches in Division I basketball is simply not a factual statement. Muffett McGraw's point was that none of the jobs in men's basketball are going to women, so why should women's basketball hire male coaches. I think the quote matters.

Your 60-40 about matches what I initially quoted above (58-42) but the study that I read said it was the other way around, with more male coaches. That was from 2023 so maybe the numbers have shifted in the past year. Even if you're right, it's too bad that more women aren't head D1 coaches given that women get zero opportunity to coach men whereas men don't encounter that ceiling.

It’s being reported that Toledo has hired Ginny Boggess - https://x.com/kylerowland/status/1777789111715221759?s=46&t=qmHojXzONY0z7kSh4Cq1Rg

I had heard her name come up also for the Marquette job where she was an assistant under Carolyn Kieger.

I’m wondering what this is about for UWGB - https://x.com/gbphoenixwbb/status/1777790038199148557?s=46&t=qmHojXzONY0z7kSh4Cq1Rg

Is Kevin Borseth retiring maybe?

That looks like a good assessment to me what it might be about.

Lindy La Rocque is likely the top candidate. The current UNLV coach is a Stanford grad and former assistant. She has done a great job with the Lady Rebels program.

Stanford is going to the ACC next year so there is the potential to see a current in conference coach like Cori Close, Scott Rueck, or Lindsay Gottlieb take the job. Only Close and Gottlieb have experience recruiting at a high academic university, Rueck would be an outsider.

Other Top Candidates:
Kate Paye, Stanford AHC
Carla Berube, Princeton HC
Megan Griffith, Columbia HC
Brenda Frese, Maryland HC
Shea Ralph, Vanderbilt HC
Lisa Fortier, Gonzaga HC

Might get a call but likely not interested:
Kim Barnes Arico, Michigan HC
Mark Campbell, TCU HC
Courtney Banghart, UNC HC
Kellie Harper, Former Tennessee HC

Damn. Didn't expect that. Unless she just didn't want to do the travel and work of learning of the new conference.

I did see on the ND board that Kiki might be looking at the transfer portal. Maybe this is where that rumor came from.

ESPN reporting Kate Paye to replace her.

I think Kate Paye has had this locked up for a long time as the heir apparent.

I thought Lindy La Rocque would be a good choice with head coaching experience and a former assistant, but Paye should be a good choice and has been Vanderveer’s right hand. Kate Paye will likely be announced tomorrow as head coach.
