"What are we doing to youth sports?" asks Frese, who is approaching 650 wins as a Division I head coach. "It’s not that serious. We’re taking the joy away. I watched one soccer game where a dad completely obliterated his kid who was the soccer goalie ’cause he kept getting scored on.

"Just watching some of the temper tantrums by adults makes you sad for the kids and their only time to go through a journey with sports. And to see that joy stolen from ’em makes me really upset when I sit and watch it because it shouldn’t be that way."

I coached Pre-K thru Kindergarten little league basketball last year. I told parents up front that we would spend a lot of time learning to play zone defense, shooting layups, dribbling, and learning how to love the game. Championship game we were undefeated and up by 25 with 3 minutes left, so I subbed in our 3 youngest kids(Who were barely eligible to play), just so they could feel like they helped us win the game. Two of their parents yelled from the stands to take their kids out because they were going to cost us the game. One of the kids cried after the game because they asked their mom why she yelled that, and the mom told her she just wasn't very good.

Adults are absolutely ruining sports for their kids, and many are damaging their relationship with their kids just to relive their younger years through them.

My kids were in AYSO soccer, where the intention was to teach them skills and fundamentals. and every kid played at least 2 quarters/ The parents were strictly accessories. We were there to support our kids, and anything less would get us kicked out of the game. We were also there to provide refreshments and water/Gatorade. We could yell encouragement but nothing else. It was pretty amazing and the kids loved it. They both played through 8th grade. My daughter went on th play HS soccer. Son tan cross-country.
