Breaking: I’m hearing the WNBA is in discussions to begin charter travel for all 12 of its teams as soon as this regular season. Why now? The explosion of interest in the league, business growth and anticipated future revenue from the next media deal.

They hired extra security to escort Caitlin Clark and company through the Dallas Airport. That must factor in as well as other teams currently or potentially saying they should have extra as well.

"We intend to fund a full-time charter for this season,” Engelbert said Tuesday in a meeting with sports editors.

She said the league will launch the program “as soon as we can get planes in places.”

I wonder if they'll be required to use the planes the league designates, to keep that equal. Because I imagine some of the rich owners already own planes (the Raiders, Nets, Timberwolves etc. may well just have their own which could be shared), so could fly the team on those.

In some ways, this is the biggest news of the offseason to me.

This is a huge, huge financial commitment, and given the relative wealth of the owners, the league must be funding much of the cost. That means whoever the owners are are willing to spend literally millions on behind-the-scenes expenses that will have only a marginal public impact.

I can't think of a stronger endorsement from a company than to make this kind of investment.

That Seattle Storm valuation may actually be accurate ...

It's great, to be sure, and long overdue!

I really want to know where the money is coming from since that was always the issue. And how is it that some GMs weren't aware until the announcement was made?

However, Engelbert’s comments also came as a surprise, at least to some around the sport. As of mid-afternoon on Tuesday, multiple general managers, who are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, told The Athletic they were not made aware of changes to the travel plans prior to Engelbert’s announcement.

Also, doesn't this now contradict the CBA?

It's not the first thing they've done that's gone beyond the wording of the current CBA. As long as both sides agree it's fine.
