I mean, you can talk trying to keep up your roster size, but 5 players out is quite a lot to account for. If they were healthy, that would be a 12 player roster, which is pretty standard for the sport.

There are 13 listed on their roster page.

https://fightingirish.com/sports/wbball/roster/

Only 12 are scholarship players. The 13th is Sarah Cernugel (https://fightingirish.com/sports/wbball/roster/season/2023-24/player/sarah-cernugel/), who is a walk-on who was granted a scholarship this season over the summer. This is her 3rd season with the team and over the past 3 seasons she has played 64 minutes over 29 games and scored a total of 20 points. She is a great worker and crowd favorite, but she is not up to Division 1 play. But in the last game against Pitt, she would have had to play if any of 3 players with 4 fouls had picked up their 5th. Nat Marshall had already fouled out (in 12 minutes iof play), Maddie Westbeld had to leave the game near the end of third quarter because of getting hit in the head (and she also had 4 fouls), leaving the Irish very vulnerable with 3 other players with 4 fouls (Hannah Hildago, Kylee Watson, and Becky Obinma). Sarah was that close to entering the game.

Given that these schools use male practice players, what is the purpose of having a player on the roster who cannot be used in games (or shouldn't really be counted as being on the team)?

Male practice players don't travel and sometimes due to outside schedule conflicts 5 or more male practice players aren't available for every practice, especially when you get into winter break and spring break. So teams will use the end of the bench players to be the scout team along with the male practice players or in place of them if they are not available.

Walk-ons are useful when the team travels or the school is on break, as GEF noted. They also help a team's morale. Sarah C. was given a scholarship because Niele had a few unused scholarships and Sarah was the only walk-on that stuck with the team going into this year. The walk-ons have to attend the summer practice sessions and all the practices during the year so its a huge sacrifice, considering they only see game time in the last minute or two of blowout wins.

No, please look. I re-titled the thread. It's "transfers 2023-24 and new signees 2024-25." You might actually have to go beyond the top 6 threads to find it.

Kylee Watson officially announced what we pretty much all guessed. She's torn her ACL.

Alabama's Jessica Timmons to miss NCAA tournament after tearing ACL:

https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/story/sports/college/sec/2024/03/18/alabama-women-basketball-forward-jessica-timmons-will-miss-the-remainder-of-the-season/73018816007/

This will be tough on Bama. I mean, they would have had a tough road anyway, but it really took a toll on them in the Tennessee game in the SEC Tournament. I hate that for her and the team. Hopefully she can recover enough to play the conference schedule next season, but just her being healthy and recovered is the main thing.
