Absolutely insane to look at some of those names that were picked before Hayes.

Natalie Novasel? Kelly Cain?? Sasha Goodlet???

"Draft genius" Mike Thibault chose Astan Dabo, saying "Tiffany Hayes is a really good player, but I don't know who she would beat out on our team." The team in question started Allison Hightower, who scored 6.8 ppg on 35% shooting (24% from three). Dabo never set foot in the US, let alone Connecticut, and hasn't played anywhere since 2019 when she averaged 6 ppg for Nice.

I had barely seen Hayes play, and still remember just seeing the college stats of all the available prospects and asking people why Hayes wasn't higher up all the boards and predictions. It made no sense, because she both had the UConn pedigree and the counting stats and the percentages. She's gone on to prove that it did, in fact, make no sense that she would be ranked so low (even though the boards were right in terms of predicting what teams would do).

It was her Pinball effect , no one knew how durable she would be with her style of play at that time.

she also had, in my opinion, a terrible rep of big game performances... she would get 30+ against big east sub .500 teams, and then consistently get 5-10ppg with turnovers and horrible percentages against top-25

Yeah, that sounds a lot more familiar in regards to what people gave as an answer at the time. When someone goes through four years of college basically never missing a game, durability isn't going to be the first concern people have for the next level.

It was still weird. She is basically the only UConn player to be downgraded in the draft rather than upgrade. Ketia Swanier was a first round pick. Kelly Faris was a first round pick just the year before Hayes.

Actually, I believe Faris was drafted a year after Hayes in 2013. Your point notwithstanding. She was really underrated when it came to the draft.

It was this 100%. As an upperclassman and particularly her senior year she consistently played poorly against all of the best opponents (Baylor, ND, Stanford and Duke). Similar to Megan Walker a decade later at UCONN.

On the contrary, players like Kelly Faris/Morgan Tuck didn't have gaudy stats but usually played well in big games which led to inflated draft spots.

Just found this multi-faceted milestone in a Chicago Sun-Times article:

Quote:
With her fourth rebound against the Mercury, Elizabeth Williams made history, becoming the ninth player in the WNBA with at least 2,000 points, 1,500 rebounds, 400 blocks, 300 assists and 200 steals. She achieved the milestone in 259 games, according to WNBA stat site Across The Timeline.

Rhyne Howard, the 244th player in WNBA history to score 1000 points! Darn Hero is 23 years, 92 days old. She is the 11th youngest to score 1000. She took 59 games to score 1000, tied with Chamique Holdsclaw for 14th fastest ever. She is the 1st player from the class of 2022 to score 1000!

She would be the fastest to 2000 if she got there in her next 31 games.

NOTE: Howard is the first 2000s born player to score 1000

NOTE: Howard, from the 2022 draft class, reached 1000 before anyone from the 2021 class. This is the first time a player has reached 1000 before anyone from the previous class since Candace Parker, class of 2008, reached the mark before any of the 2007 class.

Yikes. And that 2021 draft class isn't even close to 1000 points. Onyenware has only 673 points so far (her game is in the 4th quarter today) and she's the closest 2021 player.

Brianna Turner, the 112th player in WNBA history to reach 1000 rebounds! Breezy Bri is 27 years, 25 days old. She is the 25th youngest to reach 1000. She took 142 games to reach 1000, tied with Tina Thompson for 22nd fastest ever. She is the 2nd player from the class of 2019 to reach 1000.

She would be the fastest to 2000 if she got there in her next 54 games.

NOTE: Turner is the 4th player to reach 1000 rebounds without having reached 1000 points. Only one of the previous three has subsequently reached 1000 points.

Interesting fact! Is Bri the youngest of those 4 players?

She only needs 250 points to reach 1000, so she may make it in 2-3 seasons unless she starts shooting the damn ball more!

She's a whopping 34 days younger than Jayne Appel was when she hit 1000, so she is the youngest.

She is, and she stands a good chance of reaching 1000 points. She's only 65 away.
