I am surprised by this move. It seemed like Wade was committed to the W, or at least enough to not leave mid-season.

I don't see why he couldn't finish out the season. Did the Raptors decide he must leave immediately or did the Sky?

I can't imagine that the Raptors made the demand, unless they really want Wade to coach their Summer League team.

I wonder if Wade will contour getting techs as an assistant coach in Toronto? I enjoyed having him in the league but also found him to be overdoing it with the antics. Always entertaining and a decent coach. Maybe not a great GM but I guess we won’t be able to see him carry out whatever vision he was crafting.

With Wade headed to the NBA, Minnesota's Cheryl Reeve remains the only WNBA head coach to be hired for their current role before 2021. |
Wade was WNBA Coach of the Year in 2019. The Sky went 20 and 14 after going 13 and 21 the year before. They lost their 2nd round playoff game after Vandersloot tried to dribble out the clock in the backcourt on an out of bounds play but got in trouble and jumped in the air and threw a pass that Hamby intercepted and then hit the game winner for the Aces.

...made a number of shortsighted moves in the offseason. Most notably, he traded two first round picks (2023 and 2024) and a first-round pick swap (2025) to Dallas, the rights to Leonie Fiebich and a 2024 second-round pick to New York, and a 2024 third-round pick and 2025 second-round pick to Phoenix in a massive four-team deal that brought back Marina Mabrey and a 2024 second-round pick from Phoenix. |

Dwayne Wade to become part owner of the Sky. He says "we've been talking about it for a while" and mentions owner Michael Alter and Operating Chairman Nadia Rawlinson (Rawlinson is said to be a future co-owner). He felt as a Chicago kid and a supporter of the league it was "time to turn it up a little bit" . He says a few NBA players have called him about this and he implies they have some interest in doing the same.

Chicago Sun-Times article July 29th by Annie Costabile: "As trade deadline approaches, Sky don't appear to be active despite clear need for changes".
You do have to give up something to get something so a trade isn't a guarantee of improvement.
The author is critical of the Mabrey trade ( "The addition of Mabrey made little sense when Wade traded for her, and it makes even less sense now.") and says with regard to Wade defending it as a "no brainer" and with "I’m not [expletive] planning on losing":
Quote: |
Upon further review, it wasn’t confidence in Wade’s tone; it was defensiveness about a desperate move to prevent the inevitable after he failed to re-sign a single franchise star. |

I know that the 2023 season is a washout. It does not matter what player the Sky would get in a trade, they still would not be able to contend for a championship this year. The Sky should focus on making the team better for 2024. The Sky should get a headstart on the 2024 free agency season by trying to get a star player that will be a UFA in 2024. This trade will be a goodwill trade that will show Copper that the team wants to get better for 2024. This will hopefully inspire her to resign with the Sky next year. This trade will also show the 2024 UFA that the Sky want her to be a part of their long range plans moving forward.

So Kone has been playing for Mali in Afrobasket, and the team ended up in 3rd place. She contributed well.
Just looked more closely at the pack of playing cards we got a few games ago. The 12-pack includes all current players (including Taylor Soule) but not Izzy Harrison, who finally started showing up on the bench in street clothes. What's going to happen when one of our injured folks comes back? Thy Sky website lists 13 players.
In other news...
https://sky.wnba.com/news/fubo-named-official-streaming-service-partner-of-wnbas-chicago-sky/
STHs get "extended free trials" while others get a 14-day freebie.
We already have the Marquee Network, which I can't access. Can't watch Storm games live if played in SEA, even though I have Prime Video. Couldn't watch Friday's game live on Ion (maybe should have tried Shades' Tubi link instead of wasting time searching the app); didn't bother trying LP.
All these regional and "special" licenses are a pain! I've said it's not as important to me to see all games live (my attention span and energy level make time-shifting conducive for me), but dang! Sometimes recently, I couldn't monitor the live commentary during Sky home games because none of the TV options were available.
So the plan must be to alienate regular fans to accommodate others who may decide to chime in? And where is the money going from all these exclusive contracts?

Kone's minutes dropped off under Wade after starting out with 23 minutes and rave reviews from the Chicago announcers. I think it would be between Kone and Soule as to who gets cut if Harrison returns. As a post is coming back and the Sky has 4 other posts (Williams, Hebert, Smith, Bertsch) I would cut Kone. But Soule seems to be even lower on the coaching totem pole. However, she might be helped by Gardener being out.
Hopefully the TV money is mostly going to the teams and not the league, as one needs it and one doesn't. Would like to hear how much ION, CBS Sports and Prime/Twitter pay and how that compares to ESPN/ABC.
Sky are only a game and a half ahead of the Sparks who now have multiple players back from injury. They need Gardner back.

My occasional ride to/from the games sits on the floor near the bench. Gardner told her last night she will be back "soon" - same as what Ruthy told her and it was still awhile away.
Kone was there last night. Wade was impressed with her aggression in her first game in which she was "straight ballin'" - she had just been cleared for contact a day or so before her first game. A lot of what Wade - as well as all other Sky coaches over the past ten years - have done have been headscratchers. I am not as aware of BBall calls, rules and such, but the things I see make no sense much of the time...

It's usually not a good idea to trade for a player who will by an UFA at the end of the year if you're not thinking about this year. I don't know how it could convince Copper to sign because there's no guarantee that the UFA would come back anyway. Even if the trade comes with a contract extension, it's not going to be any less expensive than if they waited for the off season. The only difference is that they'll have the assets they would have traded.
I think the Sky should hit the free agent market early and aggressively if they want to show Copper they're serious. They'll have a larger pool of UFAs to choose from.

My statement is voided because the trade deadline is over and nothing was done.

So happy that Kah signed an extension! So many thought she was out the door, but I was keeping hope alive!
Just wondering...with some of these records, should there be an asterisk because of the longer seasons? Doesn't seem fair, as an example, to say Mabry broke Allie's scoring record when it took more games to do it.
