My great admiration for Brittney Griner continues to grow. This is an April 28th New York Times piece by Kris Rhim about Griner's first comments to news reporters since her release in December.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/27/sports/wnba-brittney-griner.html

Some of you may not be able to open this link, so here are some statements from the article that I found especially important. Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was detained by Russian security services in late March and charged with espionage in April, an accusation that his employers and U.S. officials strongly deny.

At a news conference at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Griner said it "hurts" to have been released before other Americans who have been detained longer and it hurts to see the recent arrest of Gershkovich. Since her return, Griner has vowed to help other Americans considered to be wrongfully detained. At the press conference, she said that she had not spoken directly to Gershkovich's family but that the agency that represents her had "been sharing knowledge" and that "there's been a lot of communication between both teams."

On Thursday three major U.S. newspapers--the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the New York Times--jointly called for Gershkovich's release with full-page ads in their print editions. The ad noted a disturbing trend of arrests of journalists around the world and said "Reporting is not a crime."

After the news conference, a mural on the west side of the Footprint Center was unveiled that features Griner's face and those of more than a dozen detained individuals. The Phoenix Mercury will host a letter-writing campaign at home games through which fans can send notes of hope and encouragement to detainees, as well as calls to action for elected officials to campaign for releases. Griner and the Mercury have announced a new partnership with Bring Our Families Home, a campaign formed in 2022 by family members of U.S. hostages and wrongful detainees held overseas.

Bravo to Brittney Griner and the Phoenix Mercury!

More on BG's push to bring the others home. Her strength is amazing!

Quote:
You cannot be imprisoned for 10 months, wrongly detained in desperate conditions millions of miles from home and not knowing when you’ll see your loved ones again, and not carry the scars.

You can see their faint outlines when Brittney Griner says, emphatically, that she will not play overseas again without the protection of a Team USA uniform. Or she makes a passing reference to the danger of having hope.

More vivid than those scars, however, is Griner’s strength. It isn’t enough for her simply to live well now that she’s home. She is determined to reclaim the life she had before and, while doing so, help others who remain where she once was, reclaim theirs
