Sparks also add Joyner Holmes to the camp roster.

Are the Sparks back as contenders rather than pretenders?

Sparks waive Monika Czinano.

Bummed, I thought she could have contributed to the team this season.

Iowa post players have a hard time sticking in the league. I guess the no dribble method is only so effective at the college level. I think Czinano will get another shot somewhere else especially if Gustafson can continue to get looks from every team in the league so far .

Czinano is nowhere near as good as Gustafson

Czinano's development from an incompetent backup as a freshman to legit NCAA star by her (super)senior year was nothing short of astonishing. Still, she's a fraction of the rebounder and defender Gustafson was in college, who herself isn't yet good enough on that end of the floor to crack the rotation of a competitive WNBA team.

The old school "no dribble" post play Jan Jensen is known for coaching at Iowa is obviously out of place in the modern WNBA. But-- I would argue that, without that foundation, Czinano and Gustafson would never have come as far as they have. Additionally, that skillset continues to be impactful in other professional leagues around the world. Most NCAA programs are not going to churn out Stewies and Parkers, nor should they try IMO.

Don't think it's so much the no dribble, I think it's the height. Hard to play effective back to the basket center in the W at 6'2" tops, unless one grows into a polar bear. with a bad attitude.

So it appears that the last two cuts were Karlie Samuelson and Rae Burrell.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The Los Angeles Sparks have waived Rae Burrell and Karlie Samuelson.</p>&mdash; Rachel Galligan (@RachGall) <a href="https://twitter.com/RachGall/status/1658584876961124352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 16, 2023</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

So final roster is a bunch of 5'9 players (Thomas, Brown, Clarendon, Cooke, Yang) plus 5'6" Canada and five posts (Nneka, Chiney, Hamby, Stevens, Holmes). It just seems strange to me and that we will always be playing big (with Hamby at the 3) or small (with a short player at the 3). I hope Miller knows what he is doing.

I have Thomas, Brown, Nneka, and Stevens locked in as four of our starters, but don't know who the fifth starter will be. I know Hamby has played the three in the past but I don't think it's necessarily a strength for the Sparks. We need someone who can spread the floor. We know that's not Canada. Not sure about Clarendon, Yang, or Cooke).

Idk why Curt is so infatuated with Clarendon, but we should've kept Rae instead of her. Clarendon doesn't give us anything that Thomas or Canada doesn't. We're going to miss Rae's length and ability to spread the floor. Hoping to see 2 expansion teams for the 2025 season.

Not sure if there are any other moves left, but as of now we look like this. Pretty bleh and lucky if we make the playoffs IMO.

Thomas/Canada
Brown/Cooke/Clarendon
???
N. Ogwumike/Holmes
Stevens/C. Ogwumike

Out/pregnant: Hamby, KLS
Still paying because of Fisher: Carter

Hamby played 20 minutes in their unofficial preseason game against Seattle. She'll play on opening day.

Tbh the likelihood even during preseason of playoffs were slim. The building blocks need to emerge as i don't see the Ogwumikes playing more than 3-5 more seasons.

When Layshia Clarendon makes an appearance for the Sparks she'll be the 18th player in WNBA history to play for six different franchises. The record is eight, held by Kristen Rasmussen.

WTH? The ginormous hole in the roster is at the wing and you pick up another combo guard?
