Thanks to StevenHW and Richyyy for your posts. Wishing all the best to M.A. (Mike) Voepel--an outstanding journalist--and to everyone here or anywhere who is transgender. That includes someone I know and care about who is 16 years old.

One of my all-time favorite women’s sportswriters, and one of my role models as a teen and shortly thereafter. I knew I was never going to be an athlete... but I could write. So that’s who I wanted to be when I grew up. After all the years he’s spent telling everyone else’s stories, he gets to tell his own.

+1
I emailed Voepel in college, and ended up interviewing him for a story I was writing for the college paper. I remember being floored to get a response. I also remember the ESPN live chats M.A. did back in the day on women's college basketball and the WNBA. Always such a lovely, thoughtful and warm person. Congrats, Michael!

This is a great story. When I was a young writer, there were a couple of older, successful writers who were extremely kind and supportive. That meant a lot. But one time I approached a successful actor about a story I was doing and he was extremely cruel for no apparent reason. That mattered as well. People like Michael Voepel obviously remember how it felt when THEY were getting started and respond wonderfully when approached by someone like college journalist HomerCecil.
