Quick history lesson: once upon a time, when the league was young, not only was there a Rookie of the Year award, there was a Newcomer of the Year award, which was for players who were in their first WNBA season but who were most definitely not rookies. It was given to Suzie McConnell-Serio in 1998 and Yolanda Griffith in 1999, and then retired.

Given the number of international players making an impact in the league, and given the number of players who have put in years overseas before getting a WNBA contract, is it time to bring this back? Using this season as an example, Rebekah Gardner would be the front-runner, but you might also see a vote or two for Milić. In other seasons, this would have been a way to acknowledge Allie Quigley or Sami Whitcomb.

I agree to an extent, but say if Rebekah Gardner were to win Rookie of the Year or she is named to the All-Rookie team ahead of players that are true rookies, there would probably be outrage from people saying she isn't a true rookie or she should be eligible or some things along those lines.

Are there enough players on a year to year basis that make an impact that bringing back this award would make a difference. For example last year there was talk about not even having 5 qualified players for the All-Rookie team and all 5 that were named were just out of college.

It was done then because they didn't want to make established pros eligible for ROY. Now they're OK with that.
