If you put WNBA games on broadcast television the audience will come. Court of Dreams

After looking at these numbers again more men were watching the game than women. Are these numbers normal for televised games?

I believe so. I recall the biggest demo for wnba viewers is men over 55. That may have changed recently but that is typically the case for the TV audience.

I'm a bit surprised by how high those numbers are getting for the pregame stuff. Not the one on 9/6 - because the game was listed to start at 8pm, which was when the pregame actually started, so most people probably turned it on expecting the game - but some of the others have actually been in the period before the scheduled start. Personally I usually find this stuff completely unbearable, but it shows there's a market out there.

Half the time I turn the channel on early but have it muted. Allows me to easily see when the game starts without having to listen to all the pregame truisms. I wonder if cases like mine get counted in the pregame viewership.

The WNBA Is Done Being Left Behind in Media Rights Deals

https://www.adweek.com/convergent-tv/the-wnba-is-done-being-left-behind-in-media-rights-deals/

Quote:
The 12-team league plays 36 games a season. MLS, which plays 34 games a season across its 28 teams, just signed a 10-year, $250 million per year exclusive streaming deal with Apple.

MLS averaged 285,000 viewers in the 2021 season. The WNBA just finished its regular season in 2022 averaging 379,000 viewers.

You know if you count in viewership because the ratings company would give you equipment and take down a lot of data about you. For those that are, the machines pick up on the audio to know what you are watching and have you interact to confirm that you are watching and did not just leave the machine by the TV.

Doesn't Comcast cable automatically report to Nielson?

I was on a board with people talking baseball and they seemed concerned about MLB losing the 18-40yo demographic to the W.

Some hardware does collect data. The "official" ratings that advertisers accept have more reliable data collection methods attached to them. Plenty of people leave their set top boxes on all the time and hopefully that kind of hardware has no ability to tell who is in the room watching.

Multimedia processing hardware is getting pretty clever these days. One day it will be able to recognise voices and correlate that against how many viewers press the mute button, but I don't think we're quite there yet.

That's better than expected against NFL competition.

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2022/09/wnba-finals-ratings-five-year-high-nfl-competition/

WNBA Finals opens at five-year high, though NFL takes its usual toll

Quote:
It also more-than-doubled its lead-in from the Premier Lacrosse League semifinals (Waterdogs-Whipsnakes: 234K). The PLL Championship Game is on ABC this Sunday, bumping a potential Game 4 of the WNBA Finals to ESPN.

So, get double the ratings but who gets the ABC timeslot? Rolling Eyes

'Five year high', as they say in the article, basically just means it beat last year, because that's the only time Game 1 has been on ABC in those five years. But I guess it's a good sign that at least they wanted to put Game 1 on ABC two years in a row.

I would imagine whatever deal they have with PLL says they have to show their title game on ABC. Nothing to stop them scheduling the WNBA game after it though, of course.

I think it's more of a making sure the local affiliates know what and when is being broadcast earlier than Thursday night.

Getting 650k/580k on weeknights at 9ET on ESPN makes it all the more disappointing that they had to go direct against opening day of the NFL season for Game 1. First game of the Finals on network TV could've put up something huge without such glaring competition, but instead it got less than the games on cable.

The scheduling of games has gotten better each year under Englebert. I have to image this fact will be considered when scheduling next year. The W can't avoid competition all together but I'm curious to see how this Sunday's game goes as it is on at 4, on ESPN, and is a potential championship clinching game.

They have great data this year to pursue better slots and a bigger rights deal.

I'll be interested to see the numbers next year without the Sue Bird bump that a lot of these games got. I don't know if we'll get a DT or CP retirement tour next year that could rival the fanfare around Sue's retirement.
