Great to have a longtime Board Junkie (and fellow smartass) on the board. Blue's insight would have made Susan Sontag stand up and cheer.

Yeah, don't be thinking that the background colour of this message board was just chosen randomly

Cam, you are a sweetie. And I wanted you to be the very first to know, that -like Ebony Hoffman should have done years ago- I've joined Curves. |
you should know that the owner of curves, Gary Heavin, is a born again christian who gives 10% of the fitness chain's profits to some of the sleeziest anti-choice groups, including those that spread lies about abortions leading to an increased risk of breast cancer.
if you are pro-choice, you might not want to give this guy your money.

Good one, Stever. That's where I'm at right now, between going to work and the Princeton men's game against Penn State I lost all my senses, almost literally. I couldn't feel my extremities. I'm gonna write a book on surviving the North East winter. And NO ONE has plowed the roads yet. Geez...

herrade, you got a link on that? I want to give my mom a heads-up so she can get outta there.
Oh. Hi, Blue. Didn't notice you were there. Hurrah for added brilliance! |
there's tons of info on the web, including the original SFGate article, a Salon article, etc. just google Gary Heavin & curves. |
Here's the SFGate link for everyone Actually, I'm suprised you read the SFGate Herrade! It's definitely oriented towards locals... But anyways, there's been some corrections to that article since you may have read it:
Quote: |
There are 68 outlets within 25 miles of downtown San Francisco. Most of them are tucked away in nondescript strip malls or office buildings, which keeps monthly membership fees as low as $29.
The column presented the contributions as a percentage of the company's annual gross revenues. But the Curves spokeswoman said that those pledges, as well as millions of dollars in donations to a wide range of charities, came from Heavin's personal wealth.
Here, then, is a feminist dilemma. Curves targets Baby Boomer women -- many of whom consider themselves feminists -- precisely because it offers a refuge from gyms that cater to musclemen or singles. Yet Heavin's contributions to anti-abortion groups goes against many women's deeply held belief that they should have the right to make their own reproductive choices.
What to do? Your decision. There are alternatives, including just plain walking.

Where do you live bluewolfvii?
Yep, Sam's Club is an 80% Republican donator... Totally forgot about that... but maybe it's because I've still yet to even see a Sam's Club Quickly browsing, it's interesting how all the auto manufacturers are majority Rep donators, with Daimler-Chrysler being the lowest, and how only one gasoline company is a Dem donator, Shell Oil.
Therefore, I suppose I'm doing my duty by driving around a big honkin' Mercedes SUV filled with bulk items from Costco while spiking my Starbucks with Johnny Walker, lol...

BTW, even more interesting tidbits about the Dolan empire...

Admiral,
I live in Pittsburgh- a place that is knee deep in Walmarts. Walmarts are easy to avoid because Walmarts are to shopping what fingernails are to blackboards.
Not so easy to avoid was the Sam's I had been shopping since Jimmy Carter was Mr PB and gas was being rationed. Back then, warehouse shopping was almost as green as scooping Jimmy's Georgia peanuts at the local co op. Over the years, I became dependent on Sam's and lost interest in normal liberal things. My friends had to steal my membership number to do an intervention.
Sam and I are now divorced. That doesn't mean I don't miss him when there's a cheesy song on the radio or its time for new tires.
